08:24 AM ET 10.05 | A search is underway in Queens. The Mets have whittled an initial list of 32 candidates for the GM position to between five and seven names, according to a source, and have begun the process of seeking permission from other teams to interview their employees. Assistant GM John Ricco -- who is not a candidate for the job -- will lead the front office until Minaya's replacement is hired. The Mets expect to have the new GM in place before the end of this month. The list of potential targets is believed to include White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn, former Twins GM Terry Ryan, former Oakland GM Sandy Alderson and former Cleveland/Texas GM John Hart.

They will get some 3rd rate dewd to run the team. another Duquette-esgue puppet.

Mets need to do what my Astros did last season and just scrap the whole thing. Too bad their big trade bait (Johan) is damaged goods...

Until the Coupons leave the Mets will continue to be the most pathetic franchise in New York. These guys are just terrible baseball people. I miss watching baseball and its because the Mets have just been a horror show to watch. I'm with you Sgt. trade them all especially the ungrateful one who never wanted to sign here in the first place. Ollie Perez on your roster, wtf?

did I mention the Wilpons have no clue how to manage a franchise. They're in the wrong business and the fans deserve better. Jeff, if you're reading this do us a favor and trade Beltran and Reyes immediately. I'm not sure which one is more of a diva. We need grinders like Wright and Johan (pre injury). Don't think for one second Johan didn't hurt himself while trying to carry what you and Omar consider a viable rotation. You should be ashamed of yourself to have the opportunity to build a winner and all you did was embarrass the Mets fans again. Please sell the team to a family who knows how to attract talent and manage personalities. This era has been a disgrace.

The Mets no doubt need to continue cleaning house. They have a small collection of some of the mentally weakest players in the league....Beltran is one guy that HAS to go. He's a wimp and not a leader.

They have some good players. They need to fix that rotation and get some fresh blood in there.

How did that work out for the Astro's?

I seem to remember them being a top candidate for "Last Team to Win a Game"...

They've got some good young players (Pence & Chris Johnson) - but they have a long way to go.

Why would you trade Wright? He's young and talented. I'd build around him. Santana isn't going anywhere with his contract either. Beltran is as good as gone. Probably Reyes too. Problem is, there is nobody else. It doesn't seem like the minors are exactly stacked.

Pence is not that good. An average player. But yes, if you blow it up, they'll be looking at 3-5 years of empty seats. I don't think any GM will embrace that approach unless he has a five year contract.

Is Mike "The Situation" on that list too? Just sayin' think about it Mets fans and brass!

October 5, 2010  08:15 PM ET

the mets should ask permission from the angels and just take tony reagins and sign him to a long term it will be the perfect gm because he doesn't like to sign big deals to a long term, that's why the angels fail to make a good run this season!!

October 6, 2010  08:26 AM ET

The Mets have to take the most important step no matter who they hire. Let the GM do his job, give him a budget and get the hell out of his way. No more decision by committee. The Wilpon's are idiots who won't get out of their own way.

You don't trade Wright or Reyes. They're quality players but neither can carry a team. You've got to build around them.....It never makes sense to clear out good players for the sake of clearing them out.
