07:37 AM ET 10.05 | Eyeing younger candidates with a mid-market background, the Cardinals on Thursday began constructing a list of potential successors to ousted general manager Walt Jocketty with the intention of completing a search before next month. The Cardinals plan to interview "10 or fewer" candidates, according to a well-placed club source, with emphasis on 30- and 40-somethings with experience in player development.

Everyone wants a Theo Epstein I guess...the Cards should scout the pre-schools

They may get a Jon Daniels.

See how well the Rangers did this season.

They may get a Jack Daniels.

In Space Ace we Thrust!!!!!!!!!

October 5, 2007  09:23 AM ET

That's a keeper right there.

October 5, 2007  09:27 AM ET

I just spray-painted my monitor with coffee.

I'm taken aback some.

October 5, 2007  09:34 AM ET

Right....a younger GM...like the ones in LA or Texas or something. Instead of the older guy who provided a World Series a year ago next month. What a joke.

Drive the old avenger home.

October 5, 2007  09:39 AM ET

Right Moon...can you say "what have you done for me lately?" I mean, I don't follow the Cards real close, but I know Jocketty has a pretty good rep am I right? So, how are they tying this to him?

October 5, 2007  09:40 AM ET

The TRUTH suggests that Space Ace do an unauthorized fly-by of the Cards' home office.

October 5, 2007  09:50 AM ET

I understand the logic in a sense. I'm sure the owner feels that 2006 was quite possibly a fluke (I'm not saying that because I'm a Met fan, but lets be serious, 83 wins?). And I guess he saw that the team was aging and breaking down fast. They might not be very good at all next year. And Jocketty definitely raised some eyebrows by having a bunch of converted relievers in his rotation while letting post-season heroes sign elsewhere.

That said, you dont win a World Series by pure outright luck. Its a systematic success. Its a shared accomplishment. He and LaRussa brought in a title and now the GM loses his job for a younger guy out of the Ivy League with astute knowledge of sabermetrics or something? Cmon now.

October 5, 2007  09:52 AM ET

Moon...I'll give ya an AMEN!!!!!!

October 5, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Its a revolving door. Once the sabermetric geniuses prove only to be AS successful as their traditional counterparts, guys who are pure talent evaluators will be brought back in. (I know that the article says that they want younger talent-oriented guys, but I happen to think thats a crock of s_h_i_t).

So far, the boy wonder in Boston is the only guy I have seen that truly impressed me with a WS victory - but lets keep in mind he did it in a monetary arms race with the yankees.

This just aggravates me.

People ask me what I learned at the Colorado School of Mines.

Don't go down there.

October 5, 2007  11:59 AM ET

The Cards need Charlie Donovan, the Indians' GM from Major League

I've never heard of half of these guys. This guys' dead!

So...cross him...offf

Does age decimation not apply in MLB? It seems like Walt might have a good case if he were to sue for improper termination. Maybe it does not apply because he is a contractual employee.

Walt did let the post-season heroes sign elsewhere.....but seriously....would it have been smart to sign Suppan for 4 years? I think Milwaukee will regret that long of a deal before it is over.......and Boras wanted $9-10Million for freaking Jeff Weaver. Walt was right not to sign those deals....... I think whoever the cardinals get, they won't be as good as Jocketty. I think this is just a short-sighted snit/power struggle by Dewitt.
