Laperriere's career may be over

08:37 AM ET 10.07 | Philadelphia may have lost more than a little grit in its lineup. Ian Laperriere has announced that he is likely facing retirement because of post-concussion syndrome that has left him with injuries to his right eye and brain. The Flyers are keeping him on injured reserve for now, rather than place on long-term injury (LTIR), because the feeling is, if they put him on, he will likely not come off this season. For all intents and purposes, Laperriere's season is over before it has begun. "It's been almost six months since I was hit, and I don't feel any better," Laperriere [said].

Always sad to see an athlete have to retire because of injuries. I hope he recovers completely very soon and has great success in life now that his playing days may be over. it's very important for him not to chance tragedy by continuing to play with concussion problems.

Especially one as physically demanding as hockey.

A fan of the Yankees of all teams is playing the "rich athlete" card? Get a clue bro. No no is asking you to send him flowers.

First of all, filthy rich? Not so sure. It's not like he was an elite player getting mega contracts. Second, while I'm sure he made more money than most people, his career is effectively over at 37. I'm not bothered that he made his money up front and can get a "regular" job from now on. He's going to need that money for his medical bills in the future. Third, he's a decent human being so that's why we should care.

Not you Spiny! And, BTW, I forgot to add "good luck to your Blueshirts" on my reply to your "Happy Hockey Season" good wishes. (except when they play my team, of course). Even if Phantom is wrong and you turn out to be one of those filthy rich Yankee fans....I'd just be jealous!

I meant from the perspective of the players on the team. The Yanks have the biggest payroll in MLB, so there are quite a few "rich" players. But a fan of that team says that to us in the NHL threads, it doesn't make any sense.

I'm starting to think that most of what he says doesn't make sense

Being a warrior every night for years in the NHL aint easy.

Happy trails and get well Lappy.

Few of us can, at Garden prices. It should be an interesting season for the Rangers. Still thinking that Sather might be up to his old tricks and going after Souray by waiving White and Kennedy to free up space. Wished he would have waived Roeval and let one of the kid defensemen stay up.

I heard his Doctor told him to hang em up. I'd say he's done and should not look back. He did get to dance in the final last season after he lied to them and that's certainly going to be unlikely to happen again with the Flyers for a few years to come.
