08:44 AM ET 10.07 | Semyon Varlamov's health has become a concern in Washington. Varlamov, who is recovering from an undisclosed injury, could be available for Friday's season opener in Atlanta because the club made the move retroactive to his last appearance on Sept. 22, but that scenario appears a long shot given he has not practiced fully since early last week. Indications are instead Michal Neuvirth will start against the Thrashers, with Dany Sabourin as the backup. The Capitals play their home opener on Saturday against New Jersey, and if Varlamov remains unable to go, Coach Bruce Boudreau must decide if he'll start Neuvirth on consecutive nights or turn to Sabourin, who has played in 57 NHL games but spent all last season in the AHL.

with the skaters on that team, the goaltender (this early in the season) just needs to not give up soft goals...that's it

Who the hell cares

Really

The rookie will flop and they will regret letting theodore leave

Agree. Neuvirth is capable of doing just fine. And, if you have to give an inexperiencd goalie a shot, I'd sure rather do it in October rather than March or April when a playoff position is on the line.

I concur. They could dress Newt Gingrich for all of October and nobody would notice.

Good points all. And Sabu can give a quality spot start here and there.

Can't wait to see the new building and the new defense. Should be a good one against the hated Flyboys. I only hope Versus doesn't screw up the coverage.

It's a little early for me to get all worked up about it. I'll be keeping one eye on it until after the Super Bowl as always.

Coolest game on earth? Maybe second.

I still have visions of Cheryl Bernard coaxing a big granite disc across the ice while in her pajamas.

Exactly. It's a nice position to be in to know you won't have to steal many games for your team to win.
