Red Sox forced to bring back Varitek?

09:04 AM ET 10.07 | Boston is presented with options at catcher, though each comes with its challenges. General manager Theo Epstein recently noted Martinez has worked diligently with catching instructor Gary Tuck and "made some improvements" since April. But Martinez never has been regarded as a strong backstop, and at age 32, his future may be as a designated hitter or a first baseman, especially if he commands a four- or five-year contract on the free agent market. Thus, the Red Sox' catching future is in flux. If they re-sign Martinez, he seemingly could catch for a few seasons while they determine Jarrod Saltalamacchia's viability as a starter, then transition to another position. If they don't, well, Jason Varitek may not have played his last game with the Red Sox, after all.

soooooooooo.... Ummm. Ok?

@A Fact - That picture is such a tease. So... what the hell were we talking about?

Amazing. 'tek's career has been over for a couple of seasons now, and he keeps coming back. This is sad.

Martinez is adamant about catching rather than playing first base. This season he caught 110 games and played first 14 times. In 2009, he appeared in 85 games as a catcher and 70 as a first baseman.

"I'm just going to go to the offseason and prepare myself like I always do," Martinez said. "Because I played a few games at first base, that doesn't mean that I'm a first baseman."

I would love Vmart back, but not as a catcher or 1B. He would make a great everyday DH / part time catcher / 1B. Would love to see what kind of offensive numbers he could puit up if he didn't get beat up behind the plate every night. Sox need to go out and find a great DEFENSIVE catcher who can throw out runners and work well with the pitchers. And despite what Theo may think Salty's not that guy.

This sounds like some sort of Date Rape.

Varitek will be back with the Red Sox next year.

October 7, 2010  01:25 PM ET

Article makes no sense. If they resign VMart then they have two catchers. If they need a 3rd string catcher, those are plentiful. And most of them play good defense. There is no way the Sox are "forced" to bring back Tek.

Tek should retire before signing with someone for $1M to be a 3rd string player. He's been paid $65M through his career, not including endorsements. Surely he has several million saved away.

How do you figure? Look at the numbers for ANY backup and Varitek compares favorably nevermind whos universally loved by the pitchers who work w/him for his attention to detail in calling a game plan and his ability to pick apart flaws in the their game. Its sad that you are so uninformed that you just come on here to make slanderous comments.

Please bring him back!! The C on his jersey stands for CAN'T! Can't hit, can't run, or can't throw anyone out!! He stinks and always has. The Sux fans would say he calls a good game to justify his suc king. How about letting Martinez go and keeping Tek?

He's the Ancient Mariner.

FYI- Damn Yankees win again

MAKE HIM A COACH, AND IF NEEDED ACTIVATE HIM FOR A PERIOD OF THE SEASON.

Agree, It would be a big mistake if Boston were not to keep Varitek in a Red Sox uniform.
If Boston were to let him go the Tankees would sign him as their number 1 option behind the plate
