Red Sox' free-agent targets

10:23 AM ET 10.10 | Cliff Lee is presumably off the table for the Red Sox, since he is believed to be ticketed for the Yankees and, despite the rotation's struggles in 2010, the Red Sox have more pressing needs. Adrian Beltre is likely a goner, given the combination of his expected demands and the fact that he's made no secret of his desire to play closer to his family on the West Coast. As good a fit as Beltre was in Boston, this year has always had a one-and-done feel to it. That leaves Carl Crawford vs. Jayson Werth in what could be the Red Sox' most interesting question of the offseason.

why the hell dont they go for cliff lee AND one of the two (crawford/werth)....the yankees wouldnt let that shhhh stop them. sox are ridiculous.

October 10, 2010  11:23 AM ET

The top 2 free agent targets for the Sox should be Beltre and Vmart...........before the rash of injuries hit just before the All Star break, this was one of the best offensives in the league. And that was without Ellsbury.

Hey if they could get Carl Crawford I might start watching them again. Hes an exciting player. Oh ya he's black......slim chance of that happening here in Boston. Well maybe a big slow white guy then.

Lester
Buchholz
Dice K
Beckett
Lackey

Cliff Lee is off the table because this is the Sox starting 5. Dice K has 2 years remaining, Lackey and Beckett just signed contracts last year and they'd be fools to take Buchholz or Lester out of the rotation.

This is just the Boston Herald talking non-sense. Again.

I really think they could move Dice K. He's not owed that much money, and in the NL he could be a very good pitcher. Watching the offenses that the Braves and Giants are throwing out there (Alex Gonzalez in the 5 hole), he could win 15-20 games over there.

The Giants are a AAA lineup. The Braves are a tad better. The problem with Dice K has been his health so I'm not sure who's willing to take the risk. Dice K was excellent in 2007 and 2008 when he wasn't hurt.

The Braves have a rash of injuries themselves, causing Gonzalez to hit in the 5-hole. Before all the injuries they weren't that bad offensively. They don't have much power but their team OBP is one of the best in the league.

As much as I HATE to admit it- without 1/2 of their injuries- they would've been right there.....try and re-sign victor- there aren't meny better hitting catchers availableI think they should pass on beltre - as he excels in contract years and is mediocre otherwise and will command big $ after his great year I think if they are planning on keeping ellbury- they should PASSon crawford.....werth might be a better fit there and might be a bitcheaper than crawfordThey also need to move bard or paplgoon...as they are one in thesame...and either have good value

They'd be crazy to move Bard. And if V-Mart is their catcher of the future, speedsters are going to love playing against Boston.

I'd still go after Lee if I were the Red Sox. Beckett sucks and Lackey doesn't seem to be much better.

They ranked 9th in the AL in team ERA. They need pitching help. Plus, I'd go after Lee because it'll be ugly for them if the Yankees get him.

This will blow your mind:

The Braves had a better team OPS+ than the Phillies this year. Of couse, that's not the lineup they're sending to the plate now due to injuries.

Imagine if they didn't have the injuries and Beckett and Lackey didn't suck it up so badly. It's possible that they could have run away with the most talented division in baseball.

Also imagine they didn't play like complete crap in April when only Elsbury was out. Plenty of ifs to go around.

Red Sox, we in here talking about the Red Sox?

The Sox should go after Lee & Crawford, then trade Dice K. They had plenty of guys step up while they battled through injuries, that could play full time next year

BUT what will happen is the Red Sox will act like they want Lee so that will drive up the price for the Yankees, the Yankees will sign him and then the Sox will complain about the Yankees inflated Payroll...lol

All you need to know is that the article was written by John Tomase. Once you see that byline, you need not read any further.
