Steinbrenner to fire Torre soon

According to several people with knowledge of the situation, Joe Torre's fate will be decided in a few days. And when it is, it's highly likely that George Steinbrenner won't ask Torre back to manage. Based on the edict that The Boss handed Torre - beat the Indians in the ALDS or else - there isn't much of a chance Steinbrenner can be talked out of not bringing Torre back like he was last October.

I am a Cleveland fan and I am appauled over Steinbrenners decision to fire Torre. Torre has provided consistent wins, playoff appearances, world series wins. He has at the very least made a ton of $$ for the ballclub. He is a humble, honest man and I thought that George's words before a game let the fans and players down. Shame on you, "boss".

Congratualtions to the Clelevland Indians for their victory in the first round of the playoff tournament. I am going up to the attic tonight and dust off that Cleveland Indians hat I got when I visited the Jake all those years ago, (ironically to see them play the Yankees). I am rooting for the Indians to beat the Boston Red Sox and to go on to victory in the championship round of the tournamen of MLB baseball, aka, the World Series.

Torre has a great legacy to be proud of, but the fact is, the Yankees have not had a winning postseason in what, 12 years now? It's clearly time for a change, and the Big Stein knows it. Now, could he have done this in a less grandiose way? Sure, but that's George. Joe is a sensible enough guy to know that $7Mil a year doesn't come with no strings attached.

Torre, too, will be put out to pasture.

Steinbrenner will be gelded.

Actually, they are going to do to Torre what they do to horses with broken legs...

Glue anybody?

Time for a change.

No respect by the boss. I am having Billy Martin flashbacks with the blahblah to the media. Nice job Joe - enjoy your retirement.

In this picture Torre looks like he is not feeling to well...I guess he knows it is coming. I am sorry for your loss 4192. I will be cheering on the Indians too. I do NOT want to see Boston again advance. (I have a friend who will never shut up if they do.)

October 9, 2007  08:37 AM ET

Steinbrenner should retire along with him.

October 9, 2007  08:38 AM ET

Ha, ha, ha...I know the feeling, WC.

i'm glad for Joe Torre in a way--now he can lead a much less stressful life. if he's not back next year, i really think it will help add years to his life that this job took away.

I love that all these Yankees fans are now rooting for the Indians. And they say Yankees fans are front-runners... No way.

Seriously, please root for the Rockies or Diamondbacks, the Indians don't need or want your support. Plus, we'd like to win something.

No matter what ,Torre will still find work and i wouldnt be surprised if the Torre led team makes it to the play-offs next year and the Yankees dont make it.The Evil Empire crumbles!!!!!!!Go Red Sox!!!!!

Actually Mad, my kind are processed into dog food, quality baseballs, and Australian table fare.

Steinbrenner is correct. Torre is pitching terribly, and did anyone catch him out there for those at-bats? What was he swinging at?? His performance was dispicable.... I wouldn't want a guy like that on my team either. When we needed him to make a big hit or a routine flyball, he was nowhere to be found...

As a passionate Tribe fan I want to say congrats on a great run to Joe Torre. He's nothing but class, dignity, and professionalism. Having said that, I think anyone who follows baseball is aware of the pressure and expectations that come from working for Steinbrenner. I have noticed throughout the season, but especially over the weekend, that Torre's inpenetrable patience was growing thin. He may himself, realize that it's time for a change and perhaps he has had enough. This guy doesn't need to prove anything else as a manager. Now, having said that, I am also very happy that the Indians took it to 'em, that Paul Byrd defied the idiots at ESPN & TBS, and even the Cleveland media and went out and WON. Let's go TRIBE!

Jerzy Man is right. What's crazy is that the players weren't around to make a big hit, either.

Go Tribe.
