09:23 AM ET 10.12 | The Ducks quickly moved to the latter category among the good, the bad and the ugly after the NHL's first weekend. Scott Niedermayer's retirement guaranteed they'd struggle on defense but they figured to score enough to be competitive. In three losses they've been outscored, 13-2, and outshot, 145-72. Saku Koivu has both goals. New captain Ryan Getzlaf has no points and a minus-five defensive rating. Corey Perry has no points and is minus-three. Bobby Ryan has no points and is minus-four. ... [Randy] Carlyle's job appears safe for now. "He's not the one turning the puck over all night," General Manager Bob Murray said Monday.

Whadda ya mean "already?" We've been wondering about Randy for years.

And here I thought the Pens were off to a slow start offensively.

Still too early for any team to panic or for any coach's job to be on the line.

Me to...How does he beat out Potvin Robinson etc Must have been a Pittsburgh sympathy vote.

I think he fished out 80 or so points. But still.

He shouldn't have won, just like the goalie on today's thread!

Why does it have to be something like that? Potvin and Robinson played on much better teams, yet Randy acquited himself nicely.

Carlyle- 16G 67A 83Pts 136 PIM 2nd on team in scoring

Potvin- 20G 56A 76Pts 104PIM 5th on team in scoring

Robin- 12G 38A 50Pts 37PIM 8th on team in scoring

Who should have won then?

You can always tell a Pens fan, but you can't tell them much...

Doug Wilson Langway or Robinson off the top of my head

Well, who should have won then?

Look at Robinson's numbers from that year! 50 points? Seriously? I didn't look up Langway or Wilson so I don't know about them.

October 12, 2010  12:22 PM ET

Wilson- 12G 39A 51 Pts 80PIM

Langway 11G 34A 45Pts 53 PIM

So far the only one even close in points is Potvin. So please explain how Carlyle is so undeserving.

Well apparently Carlyle won but he you have to admit is the weakest d-man winner since Harry Howell won it in 1967

It's not a scoring title it's a best defenceman trophy

No offence intended LGP. In some cases players are rewarded to get to get a team some recognition. I have the same opinion about Rod Langway.

Better not get into Rick Kehoe's Lady Byng trophy win the same year

October 12, 2010  12:38 PM ET

Actually I have a problem with the Lady Byng and the Masterton trophy .They are not awarded in the
way they are intended and the Norris is not much more than a Scoring title (although in recent years there have been exceptions)there should be a defensive defenseman trophy after all there is one for Forwards (the Selke) and maybe a playmaker award for most assists in a season (the Gretzky??)

Who Marty Brodeur ????

Since when? Defensively Mike Green is a seive yet he's a regular nominee. Paul Coffey? Not exactly a defensive stalwart yet he has 3.
