10:50 AM ET 10.09 | Roman Abramovich has broken his silence over the departure of former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho."The People" says Abramovich dragged shocked Chelsea fans off the streets of Valencia to explain the reasons behind Mourinho's exit. The Russian billionaire broke his silence over Mourinho's exit when he bought drinks for a dozen Blues supporters in an extraordinary meeting in the lobby bar of the Spanish city's Hilton Hotel in the early hours of Thursday.

Nothing new here. Jose got too big for his britches and Roman didn't like it.

So what did he say?

October 9, 2007  11:56 AM ET

No one is bigger than the club ...exept Abramovich... Seriously, this guy should coach the team. There are stories that he is in the locker room at halftime telling Michael Essien what adjustments he should make to his game. It's a freaking joke, just like the gaffer he hired because he would rather have cronies than people who make decisions that actually benefit the team.

As much as people hate Mouinho the guy was spot on with his assessment of talent. He knew players like Drogba and Essien would find their way and guys like Sheva and Ballack would not. I understand Roman aren't paying those guys to rot on the bench, but either they are injury prone or not suited to English footie.

I have said it once, and I will say it again...Abramovich is the Jerry Jones of the Prem. The only thing that makes him a good owner is his wallet, not his ability to coach or manage.

Why do you think he bought the team? It's all about ego. The guy is a billionaire many times over. The team isn't an investment. It's a trophy. He bought a team from a posh London neighborhood so he could be a star. Of course he doesn't want anybody putting him the shadows or worse, appearing to be running the show.

"have said it once, and I will say it again...Abramovich is the Jerry Jones of the Prem. The only thing that makes him a good owner is his wallet, not his ability to coach or manage"

Isn't that exactely what an owner does? Cut the paychecks and try to forward the club?

I would smack an idiot if they came up to me and said, "Man, that owner of that club sure doesn't know how to coach or manage his team".

October 9, 2007  12:25 PM ET

Well, I must say I was mad as hell when I heard Jose was leaving, but I 'm feeling a bit more calm now. Grant is not the man to move us forward but the signing, or apparent signing of Cate has made me feel a little better, and the rumor is that a reunion of him and rijkaard are on the books. we'll see but that is a step in the right direction.

teal - He cuts the checks and HIRES people to forward the club. How many owners are also coaching their clubs in any professional sport? ZERO. Why? Because they aren't coaches or evaluators of talent. They hire people to do that. When an owner mettles in the on-field affairs of their team there always seems to be problems. This is no different.

jaz - If someone owns a Ferarri, does that make him licensed to do work on it? He should sit there and allow trained professionals to oversee the mechanics of it all. Of course he wants glory, but sometimes you have to reap the rewards by delegating authority to people who can put you in a position to succeed... Jose and others allowed him to become a rockstar... and in turn he hired new people to undercut those. How he dealt with this whole situation was poor.

thanks Jaz

+1,

If the mechanic of the Ferrari criticizes the owner, constantly makes comments about how the owner should treat the car, and gets to the point where he doesn't even want to speak face to face with the owner then the owner may very well consider getting a new mechanic.

October 9, 2007  01:49 PM ET

Big Chaco,

No problem, it took me a while to figure out that those were actually links to the whole article. I thought it was just saying where the article came from.

Hugo Sanchez should coach Chelsea

October 9, 2007  02:26 PM ET

Jaz. Point taken, but if the owner is buying 20 inch lifts and a Cadillac hood ornament, the mechanic should probably slap some sense into the owner :-)

All I am saying is that Abramovich is a bit of a megalomaniac who couldn't handle someone not only being correct about his mistakes, but also correct vocally. The kicker is that Grant has deducted the same thing about Sheva after 2 matches...and now they are bringing in Ten Cate to try to keep the S.S. Chelsea afloat. Mourinho should not be blamed for him numerous mistakes.

Please, comrade ... try not to look more excited when people are taking photos. You'll likely scare the children away!

"Hugo Sanchez should coach Chelsea"

That's all Chelsea needs. The ' ego` from Mexico

October 9, 2007  04:40 PM ET

now u learn, u cant buy a club to make it prestigious, its just they way they are unless u can achieve years of sucess. i hope chelsea get relegated and ambromovic sells the team

October 9, 2007  09:03 PM ET

That's true jeevs, but since he bought the team they HAVE had some success. BTW, I couldn't care less about Chelsea. In fact I always root against them. I'm just saying.
