08:19 AM ET 10.15 | Stan Van Gundy benched his starting lineup in Thursday's preseason home game, but said it would never happen again, and that fans who buy tickets deserve better. "It's a legitimate gripe," Van Gundy [said when asked what he would say to fans who purchased seats]. "I understand if people were upset." ... "It's been bugging me," he said. "I want to say I'm sorry and I was wrong. I thought I reasoned it through, but I can't justify it. If it was the first game that somebody came out to see, you bring your kids ... I'd be upset, too. I won't do it again."

No worries, Bro.

People who own their mistakes and take full responsibility are the best. Much better strategy than throwing a fit, saying that it's everybody else's problem and playing the race card.

thats kewl SVG...now help Howard make free throws....and Lewis Rebound...and Vince play D

The coach shoulda not be concerned with fan reactionhe's got to do what he feels is best for the team, and not the fans.its preseason, fans don't expect 40 minutes of action from the starsactually his apology, imo, shows weakness of character.

I think it's more of respect for the fans and the game. I can dig that. You know we have to treat Orlando and Boston well cos of our vested interest against Miami... yo Stan anything you do is right.. just make sure whenever you play them suckers you send out the goon.

i disagree jgb...only when you can recognize that you made a mistake can you make positive change.

We love SVG in Miami. He's says real stuff. Most other coaches, players only talk in cliches or won't own up to mistakes. Its why we hated Riley who blamed all his players instead of his outdated offense at one point (now we love Riley for signing off on Wade's legwork) and why we hated Spoelstra as he kept doing same rotational mistakes and kept blaming team instead of himself.

SVG, Miami Heat fans still love! The Van Gundy's are genuine. Jeff is one of the best and honest commentators and SVG is not just one of the most honest, but also best coaches in the NBA.

I can kind of see where he was coming from....I mean those guys still had to pay for those tickets and were expecting at least ONE quarter of the stars....So its kind of a rock and a hard spot...You wont to preserve them but at the same time you want to appease your fan base....Maybe if he would have started them and pulled them 6-7 minutes into the game...I dont think it has anything to do with injuries bc you can get injured warming up, practice, game, scrimmage, or if you are Carlos Boozer opening the door....

Apologizing is NEVER a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength :-). Not many people have the guts to do so.

He was just resting his starting roster its better for them to be fresh to start the season

It's a business...and if you're not going to put the product on the floor that people paid money to see then people have a right to be upset. Yes it's the preseason and it doesn't really matter but if you are going to do that then make preseason games much much cheaper....that way when the has-beens and never-was type players are out there it isn't such a big deal...

October 15, 2010  10:27 AM ET

Now i would understand people being upset if orlando were in the finals and were up 3-0 against a team and SVG benched the starting five and orlando lost. But its the PRESEASON

Send out the goons - - - love it!! The heat will not win it all. I certify that this is not a racist comment againt LeBron James for his stupid actions and quotes before, during and after his decision to leave Cleveland without first notifying the team and the man that made him a multi, multi millionaire.

I agree wholeheartedly.

If the starters weren't doing their job, the coach was absolutely right. None of those disgruntled fans will be around when VanGundy is fired.

October 15, 2010  11:58 AM ET

Would you rather have them benched in a preseason game or get hurt in it? I would appreciate a coach resting the starters this close to the beginning of the season. This gives your reserves a chance to gel.

From a team perspective I totally understand the rationale for looking at bench players and draft picks / training camp invitees. Some important decisions need to be made so benching the starters makes sense.

From a fan perspective, I want to see the starters play at least a little. I don't care to watch some 4th string rookie (or other scrub player) that everyone knows will get cut.

You cant set the bar too high for a pre season game. You cant expect to pay 10.00 to see the game and get the full monte. Honestly I never go to a preseason game expecting to see the starters play.
