No hometown discount for A-Rod

Forget about Alex Rodriguez giving any significant discounts to the Yankees. In fact, his agent, Scott Boras sold his top client not only as Babe Ruth, but also as a TV star with as much value to a regional sports network such as YES as Jerry Seinfeld once had to NBC. And Boras also slyly noted that among the organizations that run regional sports network are the Yankees' main two nemeses, the Mets and the Red Sox, and that the Angels are considering starting one next year. The Angels have been heavily linked to A-Rod should he opt out of his contract. Boras clearly is aiming to outdo Rodriguez's current 10-year, $252 million contract. Boras has indicated in the past that the first $30 million-plus-a-year player is near.

Why should he give anyone a discount? I say go for as much as you can get. And the Yankees will buckle, no doubt, and pay the guy, because they will be worse next year, even with with A-Rod, and have no choice but to pay the guy.

Okay, its Boras what the heck did you expect him to do?. This is the uber agent of eternity and you thought he was going to say. "We've all made our money and its of no importance. Alex is staying with the Yankees and any money he or I make from his new contract goes to charity form here on in. Therefore, it is a great big tax write off for the Yanks anyway. Its all about the game of baseball guys and what we can do for the NY fan."

I see your point 4192jc, but as I wrote on another board...

How much money does A-Rod need? Is the $252 million contract really squeezing him? Is the extra $5 million/year he'd get by opting out going to make him happier or more productive?

Has it ever occurred to him that a new contract of $30 million/year for ten more years is going to be a millstone around the neck of all MLB teams but one?

All this hype about A-Rod opting out doesn't help his image. It just makes him look like a greedy mercenary who can't or won't fit in with any team he's on. I understand he's a great athlete and a lock for Cooperstown, but I really hope my team (BoSox) doesn't chase him. I think any team could do more with $300 million over 10 years than to give it to one individual. And he sucks in October.

As for Scott Boras: he would have made one fine, fine pimp. Hell, maybe he does it on the side.

October 10, 2007  08:54 AM ET

Actually I always thought that was what an agent was: A legalized pimp. "Hey man, I got what you. For a price, that is."
Or is that a dealer of certain nefarious and illicit stuff?

October 10, 2007  09:00 AM ET

Discount.....I'd like to see that "hometown" discount Scott Boras and his currency w.h.o.r.e A-Rod would formulate... 15 years @2.5 beeeelllion dollars

October 10, 2007  09:12 AM ET

I think A-rod will stay with the Yanks and will be fine with getting $25 mil a year! He truly wants to be a Yankee and has gained the trust of his teammates and fans, FINALLY!!!

October 10, 2007  09:13 AM ET

How many World Series has A0Rod won for the Yankees? Superstars don't win championships, good team play does. Scott Boras' 15 minutes of fame is almost up. Who's going to be the next team to regret spending too much on one player?

October 10, 2007  09:20 AM ET

That's hogwash......I think we all know what it takes to win ballgames

October 10, 2007  09:22 AM ET

kcar27,

At this level it's never about how much money that they need. It's all about the agent's ability to get more for every single client. The old phrase "Show me the Money", still applies. Boras will work a historical deal here, even thought he and ARod can even now use $100 dollar bills as toilet paper...

October 10, 2007  09:42 AM ET

Since when does A-rod have a "hometown"? Home is where the money is, baby.

October 10, 2007  09:46 AM ET

What rubbish.

October 10, 2007  09:49 AM ET

I'd say I'd like to see him sign with Boston, but they don't look like they need his help getting by the yanks.

October 10, 2007  10:00 AM ET

Boston? That's by a large body of water isn't it?

How far is Fenway from the backbay?

October 10, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Okay here, according to today's NY Daily News, are the options for "Pay-Rod":
1) Yankees: They have the money and the new stadium. Who blinks first.
2) Red Sox: Manny has one year and 20 mil left on his deal. If the Sox trade Manny there's half the bucks. Schilling goes: there's 13 mil. Then trade Lugo (who is still owed 27 mil over three years).
Even if the Sox aren't serious bidders look for Boras to get them involvedif it is only to scare the Yankees.
3) Angels: Colon's 14 mil is gone this year. Scoscia begged for a power hitter after being wept by the Sox.
4) Mets: They, also, ahve a new stadium. Imaginean infield of DAvid Wright, (moves to first, which also solves that problem) Jose Reyes and Alex Rodriguez. "Seats would be harder to get at Citifield than at Yankee Stadium."
5) Cubs: What would Alex be in Chicago if he wentthere and the Cubs broke the curse since 1908? Bigger than winning with the Yankees? Alex is on record as saying he loves Lou Piniella.

Anybody can have Nim-rod so long as the Rangers aren't paying any of them a nickel anymore for this playoff hex.
