Panthers pursuing free agent QB

The Carolina Panthers' search for another quarterback will take a little longer than expected. Although the team hoped to have another reserve quarterback under contract Tuesday, general manager Marty Hurney said late Tuesday that hadn't happened. League sources said the new quarterback would be a free agent and wouldn't come through a trade. It's believed the Panthers want a quarterback with some NFL experience because Carr's backup is undrafted rookie Matt Moore, who has thrown only two passes.

I'm sure Oakland will let go or trade Andrew Walter soon.He does have some NFL experience.

Rattay is off the list since he just signed with the Cardinals.

October 10, 2007  07:39 AM ET

Rattay (sp) is off the market - going to the Cardinals. One of those passes Moore through was a 43 yarder.

I still say we start talking to Baltimore about Troy Smith. I know they want experience and they don't want to have to do it through a trade but at this point we don't really have a lot of options.

I think Troy Smith would be a good selection. Where's Billy Volek? He was pretty decent when he filled in for Steve McNair before VY was drafted.

Not to play the race card, but more and more college QBs are black and are seen as runners first and QBs second. As more of these guys who are seen as just "athletes" or "slashes" or "football players" are switched to other positions, this will continue to be a big problem.

The NFL is short on QBs because the ones who could make a difference are playing receiver now. Look at Brad Smith in NY and (gasp!) The white one in Jacksonville Matt Jones. Jones and Smith really need to be playing QB for somebody.

Jones? No- he's not that good a passer

SMith? - maybe.

October 10, 2007  08:13 AM ET

volek screwed up with his attitude. not sure anyone will give him a chance to start again..

October 10, 2007  08:19 AM ET

Ya gotta consider the Cats know who was out there. They thought they should look at a guy who didnt get a job. Doesnt speak well for the state of the game.

October 10, 2007  08:48 AM ET

My money is on Tim Couch....

Isn't that right Tribe???

October 10, 2007  08:51 AM ET

Okay, that is two days in a row now you are turning my stomach AO...STOP IT!! LOL

I know, call Art Schliester(sp)...he's out of jail now, maybe he can get re-instated and come back to play.

October 10, 2007  09:17 AM ET

Hey buddy, he was YOUR savior remember....I never called him god...

Floppy McFlopperson is available however, at a steal from what I'm told...

October 10, 2007  09:26 AM ET

I keep wishing I bring up the Fannation page and see a "Forty-Niners in search of a new QB" thread. I really do. This season is giving me a headache.

October 10, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Go lay down, then, and don't come back.

October 10, 2007  09:31 AM ET

OH NO...he wasn't MY saviour...my saviour is going to be Brady Quinn....did I just type that out loud????

October 10, 2007  09:36 AM ET

Not if Anderson has his say though....maybe the dog pound should be shopping HIM around if Quinn is all that...but I will never stop reminding you of what you just said....

October 10, 2007  09:38 AM ET

Fungushnitzel, didn't the 49ers draft a QB out of Penn State? Marcus Robinson or something like that? Did he not make the team?

October 10, 2007  09:40 AM ET

Michael Robinson, yeah he's on the team but they converted him to RB

October 10, 2007  09:49 AM ET

I knew I shouldn't have typed that out loud!! As for Brady and Anderson...they put way too much on the line to obtain Quinn. As soon as he's ready, he's the QB, doesn't matter what Anderson is doing. Anderson will go back to being the backup and the new Cleveland Browns era will begin with Quinn as the starting QB.

October 10, 2007  09:58 AM ET

Something tells me if Anderson keeps his numbers up he is going to go the way of Kitna when Plamer came to town....he looks to me to be good enuff, especially at this point in the NFL, to be a starter somewhere...

Fung: just call the half back option every play. Then he can do both. Wow...I'm a genius. Someone hire me as a coach.
