Yankees: No deal if A-Rod opts out

Brian Cashman reiterated his stance yesterday that the Yankees would not pursue Alex Rodriguez this winter if the third baseman opted out of his deal, as the Bombers would lose the $21 million due from the Rangers toward the $81 million remaining on the final three years of the contract.

This is a very sensible strategy ploy for Cashman to take. It puts pressure on Boras to get a deal from the Angels for more than $25mil when they are essentially the only bidder. Cashman can always change his mind. No one would blame him. A-Rod has done a lot this year to endear himself to the NY fans, except of course winning in the post season. The question the Yanks have to ask is what else could they do with that $30 mil to improve their chances of getting back into the Series.

A-Rod has until 10 days after the World Series to choose so Boras, if he is going to get a deal that A-Rod is comfortable with, better get on it.

It doesn't matter what Cashman says, on the one hand, because Georgie has already trumped his GM by saying they defintely wwant Alex back. Way to go George, take that ace card out of your neogtiators ahnd and repalce it with a duece.
Hopefully George's sons and the so called advisors smack some sense into George's head and he lets Brian CAshman do what he is apid to do: Be the GM.
But that may, in itself, be no small feat since Hank, one of the sons, is quoted as saying that Brian Cashman has been with the Yankees "since he was an infant" and that "evreyone makes mistakes". The acorn obviously does not fall far from the tree. Hank goes on to royally tout the scouts, and especially senior VP and director of scouting Damon Oppenheimer, for the Yanks now great farm system. Hey, Hank maybe Brain had a litle something to do with keeping that farm system together once these great scouts found all that talent. Ya think? It is no secret that the Yankee's scouts were always good rather it was the ownership who always shot the organization in both their feet by using the farm system for the supposed quick fix that some how, rarely, if ever, panned out. It will be an interesting off season to say the least and my hope is that cooler heads will prevail once the smoke clears from the most recent failure of the Yankees to get past the first round of MLB's playoff tournament.

Yankees brass are IDIOTS and their fans are even DUMBER... The same people who practically ran the man out of town are now begging to sniff his jockstrap. Make up your minds already...

I hope A-Rod opts out because he was never truly respected in NY. Go get that paper man. At the end of the day, it's all about the Benjamins...

The hell with him go after Johan

October 10, 2007  08:44 AM ET

Having seen the Astros played by Scott Boras when Beltran went to the Mets, I have no taste for this negotiation. I hope Cashman sticks to his guns. It would be so unusual to see any fiscal restraint out of the Yankme's front office.

October 10, 2007  08:59 AM ET

Dare I??? NO SOUP FOR YOU ****-ROD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 10, 2007  09:08 AM ET

Don't be stupid and sign the "real" captain of that team!!! Sorry Jeter but A-Rod is more important right now!!!

October 10, 2007  09:19 AM ET

A-Rod will go with the Benjamins, just like he and Boras always have....tough to play hardball with a commodity like this....it's not just his stats but the draw and marketing power he has....especially for the parks that don't sell out all the time...granted there are few clubs that can afford him but if he opts out those few clubs can make the Yankees negotiation much tougher...

October 10, 2007  09:24 AM ET

Only the third time this has been stated in the press in the last four months.

October 10, 2007  09:24 AM ET

Give what he wants, the Yankees will make more off marketing than they will ever pay him...PAY A-ROD

October 10, 2007  09:26 AM ET

I would be willing to zip into Steinbrenners inner ear for the right price
