Green taunts won't draw fine

Against the popular opinion of several Dolphins players who spoke out against Texans defensive end Travis Johnson's actions after quarterback Trent Green was knocked unconscious Sunday, the NFL will not fine or further reprimand Johnson. Instead, the league has decided the 15-yard penalty for taunting was punishment enough, NFL representative Greg Aiello said Tuesday. Johnson was penalized after he stood over Green's motionless body and repeatedly pointed at Green. NFL director of football operations Gene Washington came to the conclusion that although the taunting did warrant a penalty, it did not merit a fine.

I disagree , but I'm sure nobody cares. Maybe the NFL should send him to a "Better the inner You" clinic. What a moran!! Maybe he gets hurt the next game and if so I hope he gets taunted ..Can't say enough about the classless JERK!!!

Everybody's talking about his rant, but no one is talking about the fall he took as a result of Greens chop block. If you look at the hit again, you'd notice that Johnson fell directly on his head and neck. Thats over three hundred pounds landing on your neck. This man could have been paralized as a result of Greens hit! Had Green not been injured, I guarantee the focus would be on his cheap hit. There's no way Johnson knew Green was knocked out, so can you blame him for yelling at Green??

Just because he's a quarterback doesn't mean he deserves special treatment. Roll the tape back. Had Green not been hurt, Johnson definately would have gotten the worse of it.

But, again, the block was perfectly legal.

October 10, 2007  07:54 AM ET

Yeah, it was hard to realize that a motionless man lieing face down on the turf was out cold....Not saying he shouldn't have been PO'ed but man show some class...He did not get hurt, that is like having road rage coz a car just about hit you... Nothing happened to him, besides maybe he got his feeling hurt coz a lowly QB knocked him on his **** or in this case his head!!

Good call by the NFL.

Legal block by Green. Johnson has a right to be ticked, has the right to scream and taunt, and has the right to watch the yellow flag fall to the ground. This wouldn't even be an issue if Green weren't knocked the F out.

By the way, I don't recall Clifton yelling at Sapp for "hitting me when I'm not looking", and that WAS dirty, and Clifton broke his hip.

October 10, 2007  08:18 AM ET

bad call by the nfl.

good call on the field about the block being legal.

but the taunting part is clearly unsportsmanlike conduct and should have been fined. this is the league that fines for showing the ball to an opponent after a score, taking your helmet off on the field, wearing the wrong sock colors, using props, etc. but standing over a prone opponent that is about to get carted off and acting like an ^hat, well, thats cool, no fine..

October 10, 2007  08:27 AM ET

While the block was technically legal, Green dove straight at his knees. He could have ended the guy's career in one stupid move, and he's so dumb on top of it that he threw his head into the middle of everything and got himself concussed. I understand Johnson's anger completely. It was a dirty move on Green's part, even IF the league says it was legal. It was really unfortunate that Green's mellon got scrambled, and likely his career is over now, but his career was over last year, after THAT conky, and Johnson has years left to go. I like the no fine, but, in truth, Johnson could have handled things better.

and everyone else that excuses Green on that basis.

It's also perfectly legal to drop the n-bomb, or call someone a f_ag or a w_tback. that does not make it ok however.

That being said, Johnson jumping up Immediatly( He didnt stand there and stare at him as the media would have you beleive) and telling Green about it isnt that bad. When he realized the guy wasnt moving, he moved away. All heat of battle reactions. His comments later, were in poor taste. He had every right to be mad, but should have kept his mouth shut. Green needs to be smart enough to know that if you dive at a guys legs, you might just get a knee to the dome.

Sure it is, just like when a kicker gets Shenihaned....yes it's legal, but it's cheap...and unsportsmanlike....

October 10, 2007  09:05 AM ET

Block was legal in the sense based on physics. A Ford f-150 trying to stop a mack truck with a trailer hitched to it. You do the math.

October 10, 2007  09:06 AM ET

BS. That was a major embarrassment to the NFL. They should have lightened his wallet enough for him to take good notice.

October 10, 2007  09:10 AM ET

nfl needs to refine the rules on chop blocking again.

October 10, 2007  09:19 AM ET

This is bull ****!!!

October 10, 2007  09:22 AM ET

TJ is a good clean player, I am glad the NFL left it alone, hey I still don't think a player can be taunted if they are unconscious. Green didn't see the taunt. just like the holding penalties that never get called.

October 10, 2007  09:31 AM ET

Green didn't see it Dbrude, but guess who did.

His wife. His children. His family. Parents, friends, teammates. What do you think they felt like as they watched Trent motionless - dead for all they knew, while your "good clean player" stood above him mocking his helpless body.

Good clean player my ****.

Goodell called the dude's mother and told her she raised a thug.

October 10, 2007  09:33 AM ET

You know what, if someone cuts me off on the freeway, clips my front bumper and spins out of control into a tree, should I stop my car and go taunt their bleeding body?

Does that make sense? Does that make it OK? Would I be in the right there? I mean after all, the guy cut me off, and now he's all smashed up. WOOHOO, LET'S RUB IT IN HIS BLEEDING FACE.

Yeah, I didn't think so.

I'd stop and make sure he was ok....so I could sue him later....am I a bad person??

October 10, 2007  09:53 AM ET

I just think that the officials at NFL HQ do not like Trent Green. Last year in what was widely considered a cheap shot and border line legal hit the NFL did not fine the headhunter who knocked Green out. This year Green does the same type of border line legal hit and is taunted and the league does not fine the taunter. I think that Green must have pissed off the wrong officials somewhere and they are hanging him out to dry two years in a row.
Oh and cut blocks are legal from Pop Warner on up and every player in the NFL has been cut in their career and should know how to deal with it. Did anyone outside of the Patriots locker room make a huge stink when the wuss from the Titans cut Rodney Harrison and ended his season last year?

That, of course, is the civilized way to handle it. As long as he's driving a nice pricey car. If it's a hatchback, better luck next time.
