Kobe's new role in Lakers offense

Lakers coach Phil Jackson has placed Kobe Bryant in a new role this season, the role of facilitator in the offense. It means Bryant starts the offense before he takes over and shoots, and it has been a slow process, Jackson said. "We talked a little bit about what I'd like to see that's not apparent yet," Jackson said, referring to the practice sessions. "It's a new role and so it'll take some kind of guidance, I think, for him to see that."

Yes, please do something to get things moving. It's the Lakers obligation to help the BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE better his chances at winning.

Maybe Phil should to get Kobe some help. It like the Lakers management is punishing Kobe for some strange reason. Just maybe Phil should change is system to better utilize Kobe's skills. The "triangle offense" isn't for everyone.

October 10, 2007  08:55 AM ET

Kobe's role is to score as many points as possible. Not too complicated.

October 10, 2007  10:12 AM ET

Kobe just needs to score. He should use Lamar to initiate the offense. He's 6 foot 10 and can handle the ball. Lamar and Kobe on the wings, and hopefully a competent Bynum in the post, leaving Fisher to do his thing which is to hit the jumper.

October 10, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Don't expect Kobe to lead. He doesn't have it in him

October 10, 2007  10:55 AM ET

Looks like Phil is trying to create some matchup problems by playing Kobe at the point. It won't work because Kobe won't give up the ball, and soon everyone else is going to be standing around watching him go one on one. Kobe scores 40, and the Lakers lose by 8

October 10, 2007  10:56 AM ET

New role? What is it? NOT being a selfish prick?

October 10, 2007  10:57 AM ET

Gimme a break, Kobe only care about himself. All this means is that he MAY glance at one more team mate before he takes his shot... but he WILL take his shot you can believe that. Kobe's motto: Shoot, dribble, deke, spin, pump fake, wave to the cheerleaders, smile for the camera,,, and THEN pass.

October 10, 2007  11:24 AM ET

KOBE was facilitating LAST YEAR, he averaged 5.5 assists and more than 30 points a game. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT. THE LAKERS PLAYERS SUCK!!! KOBE is all they got, hopefully ODOM and KWAME wake up this year and make something happen.
HANDLE IT KOBE! YOUR THE BEST BABY!!!

October 10, 2007  11:53 AM ET

So what's different? Last year, Kobe got the ball as soon as it crossed half court. Is that not facilitating the offense?

Define insanity:
Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

October 10, 2007  12:12 PM ET

He already changed to help kobe and it still doesn't work with this lineup. There is no defense and no constant offense.Phil has nothing to do with the roster.I wish he did I'm sure the lakers would be a much better team if Phil had anything to say about the lineup!Mitch sucks!

October 10, 2007  12:15 PM ET

I think Kobe is smart to understand this new role and Jackson is really the zen master. A facilitator in offense is a way to lead, to encourage, to give confidence to his partner when the matchup are tuff. It's also a way to preserve Kobe's health for the long run. The season is long and everytime the guy has to put 10 games with 50 pts for the lakers to be in the playoff, they feel it when the money does count. Maybe Phil want also play a more phoenix style with more liberty. They have the pieces to do so Walton, Odom and Turiaf are decent passers. Now it's up to Kobe' s teamates to take their responsability, or we will see the old Kobe that's we know. But I'm pretty sure that's the team USA experience will provide a new approach of the game for Kobe

Panic in Laker land when you have the biggest ball in the history of the game hog leading your offense.

October 10, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Let me repeat that...panic in Laker land when you have the biggest "ball hog" in the history of the game hog leading your offense.

October 10, 2007  12:27 PM ET

Kobe's going to do everything the Phil wants him to do for the team. Its going to be up to Andrew Bynum to be the second option this year and prove his worth. If the Lakers struggle early, yes we will see Kobe take over lots of games, but he has to do that to give them a chance to win games. If he has to continually do that on a regular basis, he will evenutally become even more dissatisfied with the team and try to do it all. But really can you blame him? Theres only so much he can do to make them better. I dont think he's selfish, he just wants to win so bad and if he's not getting help he has to take over.

October 10, 2007  12:35 PM ET

On the plus side, Chris Mihm is finally going to play again this season. He should help tremendously in the middle with his defense. I just wish that everyone would just stop saying what a ball hog kobe is, yeah we know he can go into the zones where he wants to do it all and not pass. There are going to be times when he does pass and times when he doesnt as much as many would like. It really doesn matter how Kobe plays all you critics hopped up on Haterade will have something negative to say about him. You'll have nothing but negative things to say about him no matter what he does.

I just hope that everyone here realizes that the lakers was in the top 5 in true field goal percentage (TFP) according to hollinger for the past two years as well as one of the top offensive teams. Kobe is primarily responsible for this state. My question is, the why is everyone pretending that the problem is that Kobe hugs the ball and so on ? Obviously it works on offense. What the lakers need to do is to get some defensive players so that their fifth (yes people) ranked offense can stop somebody some time. Seriously, A TOP FIVE OFFENSE MEANS YOU ARE NOT LOSING BECAUSE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR OFFENSE, SOMETHING ELSE IS THE PROBLEM. DEFENSE, REBOUNDING e.tc. WAKE UP PEOPLE

it's not kobe's fault! it's the management!

if they will surrond kobe with TALENTS same thing the Cs done with Pierce, then KOBE WILL BE GLAD TO SHARE THE BALL WITH HIS OWN GARNETTS AND ALLENS!!!!!

THE TRUTH IS, LA GM SUCKS!!!!!
