Why Stars waived former hot prospect

09:34 AM ET 10.16 | What started out as a much-hyped experiment three years ago could end today for the Stars. Once-ballyhooed free-agent winger Fabian Brunnstrom was placed on waivers Friday. Brunnstrom has value, as he is a skilled player who makes only $675,000 on a one-year contract. However, he has not been able to break into the Stars' lineup on a regular basis, and GM Joe Nieuwendyk said it was time to allow Brunnstrom the chance to play someplace else. The Stars changed direction before the 2009-10 season as Nieuwendyk was named GM and Marc Crawford coach. Brunnstrom played in just 44 games, and his minutes dropped to 10:40. He scored just two goals and totaled 11 points. That season, he lost much of his ice time to Jamie Benn. This season, he was pushed aside by Adam Burish. As a result, he has been a healthy scratch throughout the first three games.

Ya but how hard can it be to push aside a guy named Fabian?

Are you quite sure that is how you wanted to phrase that comment?

Kinda like pushing aside a guy named Daigle at a Wall mart discount.

This guy never did ANYTHING while in europe and all of a sudden the hype machine got going that he was the second coming of Forsberg and the teams just couldn't contain themselves, everyone had to try to get a piece of him. Fitting that his only significant moment in the NHL was in his first game, nothing after that.

For what its worth, my theory is the following; the Red Wings were probably quietly looking at this guy....given that everybody in the league is well aware of the red wing's stranglehold on obscure prospects from Sweden, they all jumped in because they wanted a piece of him. The problem is that this guy clearly doesn't have the tools.

How long till the Burkster scoops him up; he was hot and heavy going after him before.

October 16, 2010  01:14 PM ET

He's got a decent game in him. In his rookie season he got 29 points in 55 games, which, honestly, isn't too shabby. In came Marc Crawford and new management and Brunnstrom was not a fit in the way the new management wanted the Stars to play. The kid undoubtly got some talent and upside and with the right environment and coaching he can surely get to be a 60-70 points guy. Problem is that he also need to learn how to play the defensive side of the game if he wants to play 15+ minutes per game.

Also, forgot to mention, I could see this guy be a fit with the Islanders or similar. I was gonna say Rangers but Torts will have absolutely zero patience for his inconsistency and lack of back checking.

October 16, 2010  01:32 PM ET

I was hoping to get more out of him! He'll play for.........well I don't know! He'll play for someone, who thinks he just needs the right "environment".

Apparently, not very hard.

While I liked him in Maryjane, Fireball 500 and Mr Hobbs Takes a Vacation, I seem to recall he got 4Fed out of Vietnam because being around all those soldier boys could have caused him to develop homosexual tendencies.

Well if it isn't the "Bill O'Reilly" of the TD boys. I'm quite sure nobody here is dumb enough to rise to your attempt at controversy.
