USC backup-turned starter injured

USC coach Pete Carroll announced that third-year sophomore Mark Sanchez would start Saturday game against Arizona. John David Booty, who struggled against Washington and suffered a broken middle finger on his throwing hand in last week's stunning loss to Stanford, will sit out so he can heal, though he will be available if needed as an emergency backup. Sanchez, however, is not completely injury free. On Wednesday he jammed his left thumb, and he wore a heavy bandage on his non-throwing hand during practice Thursday.

There's a hand conspiracy in Southern Cal. I swear it's not me! No seriously, why is everyone looking at me? Of course, it's not like I go to their dorms in the night and drop their Ballroom Dancing books on them!

So if Booty and Sanchez are injured, who's the 3rd string QB? I'm not that familiar with the 'SC depth chart.

I guess USC needs to start suiting up those Elite Alumni.....

Maybe they will rent Peyton Manning for this weekend.

dang....slow day...no bites.....

October 12, 2007  12:34 PM ET

Yeah, it's a slow sports day. Plus some of the regulars might be busy.

October 12, 2007  01:00 PM ET

Don't worry - the howling little girl will be here soon!

October 12, 2007  01:01 PM ET

Is it even possible for USC to lose this week? I would love it, but can it really happen?

October 12, 2007  01:02 PM ET

And Fornacis, renting Peyton may be an option. Never rule out anything in California.

October 12, 2007  02:22 PM ET

At this point in a season how many players are 100 percent injury-free anyway? Another non-story, and another pile-on of USC. Wow, there's a shocker.

Mitch Mustain is ineligible. I don't know who would play. All he needs to do is get roughed up against Arizona, and he could miss the ND game. Awesome.

October 12, 2007  04:40 PM ET

we will rebound this weekend from that horrrible loss! Sanchez wasn't bothered by the jammed thumb yesterday or today!

J Hova...mike mcdonald is the 3rd string or it could be this cat Garret Green, who plays numerous positions. Next year Mitch Mustain will be in the mix

Thanks for the answer killiminatti.

October 12, 2007  05:41 PM ET

Does this mean that USC will actually be rank somewhere less than #1.

For the upcoming season

When your team is losing blame the QB's hand injury.

October 12, 2007  07:45 PM ET

I think Peyton Manning went to Tennessee, not USC, Fornacis.

October 12, 2007  08:44 PM ET

Even Heard of Aaron Corp, the prized QB recruit that the Trojans snagged? He never got recognition as a senior in HS because Jimmy Clausen took it all in Cali

October 12, 2007  09:02 PM ET

Larry B, does Peyton Manning know you're stalking him?
