A&M's Franchione in jeopardy

Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne said he spent 2 1/2 hours reading football coach Dennis Franchione's secret e-mail newsletter, the "VIP Connection." He grew more upset with each page. Byrne left no doubt Thursday that Franchione's job is now in jeopardy. Byrne said he admonished Franchione and ordered his personal Web site, CoachFran.com, shut down immediately. A&M officials announced Franchione violated NCAA rules by not disclosing the outside income obtained through the $1,200 newsletter subscriber fees. The e-mails mentioned the names of recruits, which is also a violation.

What a jerk, I heard about some of the things he wrote....A&M deserves better.

October 12, 2007  08:54 AM ET

He deserves to be fired. To hear that A&M rebuked him but let him keep his job is pathetic.

October 12, 2007  10:18 AM ET

It's mid-season, and hard to fire a coach.

Besides, this isn't about getting rid of Fran (now or later), which appears to be more of a done deal given his record at the school; it's more about getting rid of Fran without paying the big buyout that'll be required if they don't do it right.

October 12, 2007  10:32 AM ET

This is more of a blessing in disguise for A&M... Fran's decisions misrepresent the school, but at the same time, A&M gets to 1) get rid of Fran (finally) 2) Not have to pay the buyout due to contract violations

October 12, 2007  11:09 AM ET

Why did he leave Alabama?

October 12, 2007  11:56 AM ET

I don't know slippery, but in hindsight, I am so very glad he did.

October 12, 2007  12:10 PM ET

Claimed A&M was his dream job.

His destination job.

He dropped a turd during his dream.

October 12, 2007  12:35 PM ET

Alabama was his dream job before A&M was. I think he left because Bama was on probation at the time for things done by one of the previous regimes. As soon as he convinced all the players to stay instead of exercising their right to transfer without losing a year of eligibility he bolted. I'm a big A&M fan and could care less about Bama, but we probably should have seen something like this coming. Dennis is more than just an embarrassment, he's got A&M in trouble with the NCAA. Enjoy your last hurrah.

October 12, 2007  12:54 PM ET

Now all he has to do is go to Kentucky and he tell his grandchildren that he coached at the same schools are Bear Bryant, only in reverse! Some guys really have to standard of ethics, and it appears the big Dennis is one. Sorry for you A & M fans and supporters. At least Saban won before he showed his hand.

October 12, 2007  01:00 PM ET

Let him go now. If this is someone who has violated NCAA policy, then what bigger statement can you make?

October 12, 2007  01:06 PM ET

Let's see, he left New Mexico before their first bowl game in decates for TCU. He left TCU for his dream job in Alabama. He left his dream job for his dream job at A&M. What's up coach, no guts? No integrity? No $$? Oh, I know, NO HEART!!

October 12, 2007  01:10 PM ET

Gig 'em...for the right price!

October 12, 2007  01:28 PM ET

...yeah...franchione seems to have the same loyalty as say....billy gillespie...but i would have left alabama under the same conditions...they were to lose 20 or so scholarships...no bowls for 2 years...probation for 5...something along those lines...

...so who do we hire now? how bout the boise st. coach?

October 12, 2007  01:47 PM ET

nah, boise state coach is pretty offense minded. A&M was always known for its hard hitting defense, so they need a coach thatll go to that, not this 4-2-5 bend but not break crap

October 12, 2007  01:47 PM ET

Coach Fran is a **** bag. How stupid is it for the administration and/or Fran to think this information would not be used by "gamblers". This guy is scum. "Hold the Rope" Fran, you piece of crap.

October 12, 2007  02:32 PM ET

i've heard rumors of A&M possibly picking up auburn's coach tommy, can anyone confirm or at least second this rumor?

October 12, 2007  02:54 PM ET

He's an S-bag.

October 12, 2007  03:16 PM ET

That would be hilarious if A&M got Tuberville. Hmm... that first coach from the Alabama school didn't work out... lets go get the other one.

It would be smart on A&M's part. Tuberville is a good coach, and he will definitely beat Texas and Oklahoma. A&M fans would just have to get used to dropping a game or two against a weaker team each year in exchange for victories over the tougher teams and rivals.

Don't really see how it makes sense from Tuberville's perspective though. He spent a year as an assistant coach for A&M, but I don't know if that's a strong enough connection to bring him back when he has a good thing going at Auburn.

October 12, 2007  03:21 PM ET

Franchione should have been in jeopardy based in barely above .500 record. This will justify the AD firing him at season's end.

October 12, 2007  05:13 PM ET

Why are they waiting till season's end? They should fire him right now. Anything less sends the wrong message.
