La Russa's return hinges on Duncan deal

07:42 AM ET 10.21 | Tony La Russa is coming back for at least another season as the Cardinals' manager. But the move, while official, won't be complete unless the team takes care of pitching coach Dave Duncan by fulfilling his request for a multi-year contract. Losing Mark McGwire as the batting coach would not cause a disruption in the baseball operation -- more on this later -- but Duncan has been an essential piece of the Cardinals' success over the past 15 seasons. I'd be surprised if McGwire opts to return to the Cardinals. It's pretty much a thankless job for him. He won't get a fair shake here. Fans view him as a propped-up La Russa pet, undeserving of his job.

WHY is the Cardinal Front Office being a PITA about this? Sign the greatest pitching coach ever for 3 more years and GET OVER YOURSELF!

I agree. I don't quite understand why the frount office has to think on this. Duncan want's three years, give him the contract.

No doubt. 100% agree. He can stay as long as he wants as far as I'm concerned.

I figured he was well into his career as a bouncer someplace.

Cuz Mo opened his mouth and stated that no coach would get more than a one year contract, for whatever reason! *rolls eyes* If Dunc walks, I certainly wouldn't want to be Mo!

I don't think he's even in baseball anymore and there's no way he's ever make the team

But..........you are constantly saying that the Cards have no talent.....so how could anyone win 85 games with such a lack of talent??

October 21, 2010  12:36 PM ET

winning 85 games gets you the same place the cards are this year...early vacation. it is obvious they have talent, in some positions, they also have very dumb owners and a **** GM and a drunk idiot for a coach and some pitchers that shouldnt be in MLB...that is all I am saying
