06:30 AM ET 10.22 | If the Yankees' season ends Friday night, it won't be because of Phil Hughes. That's not just my opinion.hat's also the opinion of an American League scout who saw three of Hughes' starts from up close this season and, even though he wasn't in the ballpark last Saturday, came away from watching Game 2 on TV convinced the Yankee righthander fell into the trap of trying to overpower a lineup that feasts on fastballs. "He forgot to pitch," was the way the scout put it by phone Friday.

I think Hughes will be fine. Would not suprise me if he pitches like he did against the Twins

Yeah but Texas can hit on a whole other level compared to the Twins...

At the very least, Hughes should give them a chance to win. Yankee bats need to come alive and score some runs.

October 22, 2010  10:11 AM ET

Serve it up Phil .. the Rangers are ready.

October 22, 2010  10:12 AM ET

He can do it. But will he do it? We will find out soon enough.

October 22, 2010  10:17 AM ET

Just being honest here...I'm hopeful that Hughes will put us in position to win this game but it's going to be tough. Are the Yankees good enough as a team? That's the question. Too many guys not hitting worth crap. Cano needs some help.

whoever this scout is is right.......most of the hits hughes gave up in game 2 were with 2 strikes on the batter trying 2 blow a fastball right by the hitter........how about throwing your change or curveball OUT OF THE STRIKE ZONE.........i believe(no i hope) he can do good 2nite cuz if he doesn't my yanks are history.........besides prior to that game 2 he hadn't allowed an earned run in Arlington in like 15 1/3 innings.

a pretty good comment, he was not throwing aggressively, not commanding the plate. He needs to throw his game plan and hit his spots, or it will all be over. He has the ability.

Shouldn't the job of the catcher and pitching coach be able to point out when something is not working and go to something else? Especially since Hughes has not been in the majors for very long?

And this is one of my major complaints with the Yankees and has been all season. I'd like to be more eloquent but basically, Posada sucks.

October 22, 2010  12:07 PM ET

You just keep doing what you're doing, Phil. I have no complaints... :-P

October 22, 2010  12:42 PM ET

Phil needs to command the plate, hit his spots, keep them off balance and also throw in that nasty cutter he learned from Mo while in the pen... Let's go Phil !!! You can do it !!!

I think Hughes will implode tonight. He's a young pitcher pitching on the road in a must-win game that decides the fate of his team. That's too much pressure to put on a young pitcher who is still very inexperienced. Meanwhile Colby Lewis has absolutely no pressure on him because knows Cliff Lee is there for game 7.

October 22, 2010  01:54 PM ET

He'll get bounced...about the 4th inning tonight. GO RANGERS!

October 22, 2010  01:56 PM ET

He is a complete bust...

Can see it playing out this way, especially if he has a bad 1st inning it snowball out of control really fast.
