Irish face quarterback controversy

Charlie Weis faces a decision: Does he stick with his hotshot freshman, Jimmy Clausen, who clearly is the future of the program, or does he go with Evan Sharpley, a junior who gave the Irish some hope yesterday in a 27-14 loss to Boston College. "I'll have to wait and see how it goes," Weis said. "I've never big on blaming the quarterback for a lack of production of the offense. Obviously he's part of it."

How is there a controversy? It's got to be Sharpley. This would have been a game if he played all 60 minutes. It also should have been 27-21. That holding was bullcrap.

October 14, 2007  09:04 AM ET

I agree with IrisR#1 - there is no controversy. Sharpley is the guy.

Wait, this is the NFL Truth and Rumor section, why is this even here?

BC Rules, Crying Irish Drools....

Shut your fat mouth Bob, you know if we wouldve played sharpley for 4 quarters, we would have won that game, the holding was BS and so are your Eagles

October 14, 2007  10:14 AM ET

SC is going down. We will make it to a bowl game if we start Sharpley for the rest of the year.

October 14, 2007  10:36 AM ET

Clausen may be in Irishvana in three years, but Weis may not, so best he start sharpley now if he hopes to be there when/if claussen has some success.

I do not think so. I believe the NCAA requires you to have a winning record to appear in a Bowl game, and that is just not going to happen this year..

I love how Notre Dame fans focus on the one questionable call that went against them and not the 15 that were for them. That was possibly the worst officiated college football game of the season and mostly in favor of Notre Dame

Stop crying. Start whichever QB you want, BC is on to much bigger and better things. Sometimes little brother beats down big brother and when it happens five straight times, you realize who controls the dinner table.

Notre Dame is pitiful.

October 14, 2007  11:10 AM ET

START SHARPLEY ALREADY WEIS...I am TIRED OF SEEING MY IRISH GO DOWN LIKE THIS...GIVE CLAUSEN TIME TO DEVELOP...and i hope this wasn't just a lucky game for sharpley...HOLDING CALL MY A**

October 14, 2007  11:11 AM ET

Name one call that was crappy and went Notre Dame's way, BK. Name one.

Those 15 penalties were all just, and there were many more that the refs didn't call. USC-ND next week. If Clausen starts, USC 24-7. If Sharpley starts, ND 24-21.

i haven't seen a more delusional fan than IrishR#1

October 14, 2007  12:03 PM ET

who cares
they're moving to the sub-division next year anyway

October 14, 2007  12:09 PM ET

It should be Sharpley, but once again Charlie is going to name Clausen as this week's starter. I think Charlie knows that this season is over so why not stick with the freshman and get him ready for next year.

October 14, 2007  12:10 PM ET

IrishR, Touchdown Jesus could be quarterbacking the Irish and 'SC will still win. I know they lost to Stanford, and looked pretty average against Arizona (hell 'SC has looked average all year) but the Trojans beat this Irish team no matter who Charlie picks.

October 14, 2007  12:24 PM ET

for all of those who are bashing notre dame here, let's not forget how miserable of a football team this was before the ucla game. They had no chance of winning a single game right? Then they come out and play extremely competitively against the "number 4" team in the country. You can't have it both ways. I know the Irish aren't a good team, but to say they suck when they almost beat boston college in a game they had no business even showing up for, then I know you are blinded by your hatred for notre dame and can't offer a legitimate opinion, not that any of you bashers have offered a legit opinion on this board so far.
I was at the game, every roughing the passer, every false start, every hold was a no-doubt call. They hit late out of bounds and paid for it. Notre Dame got called for penalties that they should've gotten called for, so it was fair.
Hey THF, it's called being a fan. Let me apologize that whatever team you root for (feeling particularly bitter this morning, are you an LSU or Cal fan?) doesn't have fans that are as passionate and love their football team as notre dame fans. Why would we say our team sucks? That's no way to support your team. Notre Dame doesn't boo their team. If you've ever been to a game, which I bet you haven't because I bet you're one of those people that hates Notre Dame because someone told you that you should, you would know that the football team gets a standing ovation from the student section after every single game. No matter the result. Call us losers? That's fine. It's actually called dedication and support. It's quite pathetic how you hate on these fans, but I bet you're the same way with your favorite team.

Jimmy "Ron Pawlus" Clausen is third string at BEST...he is as OVERRATED as WEISS....wait....I take that back....BEING more OVERRATED than WEISS is NOT possible....HE is stealing money from Notre Dame..but hey...they deserve it..

October 14, 2007  12:30 PM ET

Weiss is an "OFFENSIVE GENIUS" right?...well hmmmm he lost Quinn last year..(who by the way was a Willinham recruit) and now he has HIS own QBs and he has produced 2 count them "2" offensive TDs this year...the UCLA game they took advantage of turnovers...no long sustained drives...the DEFENSE at NDame is a JOKE...if the whistle had not blown in thier last 2 bowl games..those teams would still be scoring points....The REAL issue IS that there is NO IMPROVEMENT with the look of his recruits....Florida and OU(on probation in 90s) and other schools new coaches take over programs and with 1 or 2 years compete on WIN National Championships....WEISS recruits and his program are moving the other way..they are getting WORSE each year...Nobody has to bash NDame the facts speak for themselves....

Batman Sooner you make no sense. Spell the names right. C L A U S E N is not overrated, he's inexperienced. Just like Brady Quinn his freshman year. What? You thought Brady Quinn was a heisman candidate when he was a freshman? W E I S (that's right, one S) has the number one recruiting class in the nation, just updated this week. I won't go any further arguing that point against you, I'd love to hear what you have to say about that considering "recruits and his program are moving the other way." Awesome.
