Notre Dame's Clausen hurting

Jimmy Clausen is hurting. How much? Not sure. What's wrong? No one's saying. Surprising? Is it surprising when a seam bursts on a punching bag? At any rate, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis believes his freshman quarterback is hurting. He believes a languid performance Saturday against Boston College was partly symptomatic of this, so he yanked Clausen after a deflating second-half interception, then watched a "fresh" Evan Sharpley enliven the Irish. Thus Weis has a convenient pretext to remove Clausen from harm's way, to change offensive keys to E-Sharp. The Irish coach said Sunday he had not settled on a starter for the USC game Saturday, though he will name one Tuesday.

This is Clausen's only chance to play 4 years of football.Because without the switch he will get seriously hurt soon!!!

clearly he's not 100% right now because clausen is supposed to have the accuracy and the cannon. He has the accuracy that's not his problem, but he doesn't throw the ball more than 20 yards. Maybe not even 15. Then when Sharpley gets out there they bomb it down the field, run deep crossing routes, all that good stuff. So clearly it's not the playcalling either. Sharpley doesn't have more experience than Clausen besides sitting on the sideline for more time, which granted is valuable, but nevertheless the offense changes when Sharpley is out there. But Sharpley supposedly doesn't have half the tools Clausen has. Start Sharpley, the offense goes from very average to slightly above average with him under the center.

Natural talent and arm strength do not a college QB make. My guess is that Clausen, a very young man after all, is getting demoralized by all that Irish losing that wasn't supposed to happen. Probably as he sees it, it's all on his shoulders. The weight of ND is too much to carry and Weis should help the kid out by playing Sharpley the rest of the year - or at least Clausen intermittenly. Sure the freshmen needs the reps, but he doesn't need the burden of failure. Let Charlie - who deserves it - take care of that.

Insert shot here.

I think he's just a homosexual...

October 15, 2007  02:38 PM ET

He told former Oaks Christian teammate Marc Tyler (current USC RB) he would lead Notre Dame to four victories over USC. It's game week Clausen, time to put up or shut up. USC is down 1 QB (starter), 5 RBs, 8 OL (4 starters), 4 LBs (2 starters), 5 CBs (1 starter). Clausen is garbage. Get ready to enjoy winter in South Bend, Indiana.

Funny most ND posts have a long thread, I guess losing has the irish faithful 'in hiding' or better put The Truth may be correct, they are "in the closet".
Even though USC is very beatable this year ND is going down Saturday.

October 15, 2007  03:00 PM ET

Is "beatable" a word? IF so did I spell it correctly? Ah I can always blame it on drinking, that is so sweet.

October 15, 2007  03:26 PM ET

I wonder if Jimmy is regretting his decision to go to Notre Dame? Maybe, redshirting at Tennessee or Southern Cal. looks better and better to him by the day.

October 15, 2007  04:59 PM ET

ND was his best choice, he couldn't survive the SEC and Sanchez and Mustain would start over him until he was a RS JR. Enjoy the weather Jimmy.

October 15, 2007  05:25 PM ET

ND SUCKS!

October 15, 2007  06:54 PM ET

As a USC fan desperate for a win here, I'm hoping Weis goes with Clausen, meaning (even as a Notre Dame hater I must admit this) Sharpley should be the guy who gets the nod and the guy capable of beating USC. He picked a lot of momentum the other day and is probably the right pick to start vs. USC on Saturday. Please Charlie, stay the moron you have all year and announce Clausen as your starter.

i love all you haters........GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!

October 15, 2007  08:11 PM ET

Should have went to Tennessee like your other siblings did. Little Jimmy too big for his britches.

October 15, 2007  08:39 PM ET

Jimmy "RON PAWLUS" Clausen......."DA SHIP BE SINKIN'!!!"

October 16, 2007  08:49 AM ET

No Irishfancv...hating is when you put down something that's great.. ND is horrible so it's really just speaking the truth/piling on (which is always fun to do when it's overrated overhyped ND)

eaa97, gotta disagree on Pawlus, he was THE most overrated player to ever play QB at ND...EVER! I've never seen anyone get the kind of hype he got coming in and perform soooo poorly. Having Pawlus tutor their QB's will guarantee their QB's stay mirred in mediocrity. Pawlus sucks (still) and so does Notre Dame! Why does everyone hate ND? Because they are consistantly the most overrated team in the nation and their fans scream how great they are even when they're losing to every team in sight.

October 16, 2007  02:10 PM ET

I actually will be surprised if Navy DOESN'T beat Notre Dame.. that option attack is gonna have Irish defenders falling all over themselves

October 16, 2007  04:51 PM ET

True that Marin. However, I doubted Mustain would have transferred to Southern Cal if Clausen was already there.

Actually, if the rumors are correct Mustain wanted to go to the Irish but the prescense of Clausen scared him off.
