Kelly, Irish overwhelmed?

08:26 AM ET 10.26 | There will be no quick fix in South Bend, and Brian Kelly's honesty, while admirable, may not be helping build his legacy. [The] narrative many of his detractors formed early is starting to take shape: Kelly's an overwhelmed coach not ready for a spot like Notre Dame. Supporting those claims is Kelly's willingness to fall on the sword for the losses against Stanford and Navy. His candor after both of those games, when he admitted that the opposition confused his players by showing a look they hadn't seen during film study was something fans and press aren't used to hearing from coaches that never concede strategic defeat. It's ammo for those that believe Kelly's overwhelmed, but it's also likely a sign that he's comfortable enough in his own skin that he realizes his team's psyche is much more fragile than a 20-year veteran head coach.

Kelly is highly overrated as a coach.

What happened to the Irish never losing to a Service Academy? I guess Kelly should have 30 minutes of practice for the triple option vs 15 minutes.

I love it how nobody gives this guy the benefit of doubt. He is a first year coach that was left without a QB, star receiver and a couple others, and everyone thinks he should be winning every game.
The Irish will be back but its going to take time, not just one year. He needs at least 2-3 years to turn the program into a contender similar to what he did at Cinci. You can't judge a coach by the players the former coach brought in.

Yea. Haven't they been practicing for that all season? The Triple O is tough to stop unless you take the time to practice against it - is the theory. Uh-oh...
According to scouting agencies, they've got the talent.
Damn, that sounds familiar. :(

This is true, but we and the media will anyway. ;)

First years are almost always tough years for new coaches. Everyone has to learn all new formations and plays and terminology.

The 6th year is also well known as a difficult year for coaches.

And the 2nd year for OCs?

The Irish have lost their fight. It doesn't help Kelly's wins total when he's on national tv ripping a new "one" into his players. He needs to watch some film of Coach Lou Holtz during the 1991 championship season. If the players won't run through a wall for their coach, they won't win many games.

Navy can run the ball on anyone...
... remember last year versus Ohio State?
I can't recall any team stopping Navy's option in the last 10 years.

ND's last 2 coaches, CW and TW, didn't do too bad in their first seasons, but things went downhill after that a little.

CW had TW's recruits that's why the fat guy did okay in Year 1.

I have to admit that I was cheering quite raucously when Navy blew out ND. Who was the guy posting that ND was going to kill Navy? Was he around yesterday or today?
I thought it would be a competitive game, but ND was nowhere to be found (I am rubbing it in - in jest mind you).

I think Kelly will do a good job at ND. Look for the Irish to improve every year.

Did okay? CW went 9-2 and got a ten-year contract worth millions! Yeah, he did okay. TW had Davies recruits, so that is why he did so well too I guess. There have been some very, very successful first year CFB coaches and yes, a lot of credit is sometimes do to prior year recruits, but not always. ND was desperate, Kelly was hired more because of his religion and name more than his coaching career.

Yes, like they did under TW and CW, oh wait, never mind. However it would be hard not to improve over what they have shown so far this season, no matter the coach.
