Hoosiers coach in trouble again
Posted: Monday October 15, 2007 06:38AM ET
Lance Stephenson was among the recruits who attended Hoosier Madness at Indiana over the weekend and met with basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. "It blew me away," the Lincoln star said yesterday. "Everything seemed perfect." But just hours after Sampson left Indiana, his father, Lance Sr., learned Sampson had committed recruiting violations and the school had imposed sanctions yesterday. Sampson had participated in three-way phone calls with recruits while still on a year-long probation that ended in May. He and his staff broke NCAA phone rules while at Oklahoma, and one of the penalties levied was that Sampson had been prohibited from making any phone calls while on probation. As a result of the new violations, Indiana will lose a scholarship next year and Sampson will forfeit a scheduled $500,000 raise.

Report Offensive CommentLance is a pretty good player.
Sampson is trying to find loopholes in the rules and the NCAA is shutting him down everytime.

Report Offensive CommentSampson has been proven to be a cheater in the past. Indiana knew it and they still hired him. What does that say about them?

Report Offensive CommentSampson isn't trying to find loopholes, he is cheating. He knows the rules and still decided to cheat. He should be fired. Didn't he have a warning when he was hired?

Report Offensive CommentCoach Sampson is a bonafide moron. I'm still shocked that Indiana hired this fool after all the ridiculous things he did at ZeroU.

Report Offensive CommentHow exactly does one participate in a three-way conversation without knowing it?
I had high hopes for Sampson getting IU back to where they belong, and I'm not going to give up yet. The fact that a coach at IU felt he needed to cheat to gain an advantage shows that today's high school youth are not concerned with tradition and passion for basketball, or that everybody else is cheating, or both.

Report Offensive CommentI hear Sampson is co-authoring a sequel to OJ's If I Did It. "If I Did A Three-way - A hypothetical account of a loser coach who can't stop cheating."

Report Offensive CommentWhy does he still have a job? I could build a good program too if I didnt follow the rules that everyone else has too. What a joke wow he loses $500,000 . He should lose it all

Report Offensive CommentEvery established program must maintain its dominant reputation which often involves cheating when it comes to recruiting..its just a matter of who gets caught and when... The rules are rediculous, the only way a coach should get in trouble is when there are direct complaints from the players being recruited, every recruit loves sampson, his personality, and his coaching so if thats the case leave the man alone and let him recruit! Bunch of ****... I bet no one here that made the posts above has ever cheated in anything... Yea thats what I thought, so stop crying about Sampson doing it!

Report Offensive CommentHey Kelvin, if this is true (& I have no reason at this point to doubt it isn't) how stupid can you be? You get put on probation for doing something then come right back and come in through the back door via a 3-way phone call and commit the same crime. Being a Hoosier fan, I hope the NCAA is lenient, but I don't expect them to be.

Report Offensive CommentIf the sanction against him is worded saying that he cannot make phone calls, then how did he mess up. Assistant calls the recruit(s), then calls Sampson, and the conversation ensues. It is a loophole but if that is how it went down....
