Lou lowers boom on players, endorses MacLean

08:12 AM ET 10.29 | Though his team is threatening ignominious records set in the early '80s, John MacLean is safe. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello says he has faith that [MacLean] can guide the team out of its early season slump, and that "it's ridiculous" to suggest the rookie head coach might be fired. Instead, Lamoriello called upon the Devils' "top players" to raise their games after Wednesday's 5-2 loss in San Jose left the team at 2-7-1 -- its worst record through 10 games since it opened 1983-84 at 1-9-0.

Maybe Lou should lower the boom on himself for F'in up the Cap situation so badly.

Try some of the tactics the B's are using................it's working!

This isn't a typical Lou decision, and I'm not convinced he's behind it, as the owner played a much larger part in this than Lou's letting on!

With giant hip check.......players complain that Lou plays too rough!

True.
Hard to believe the Devils are in last.

Maybe, maybe not. But he can't be that big of a puppet.

The cap issue has nothing to do with the team right now. They just like the Bruins have plenty of cap space because of so many injuries. Kovie is the least of the Devils problems at this point. They have 3 rookie Dmen playing because of injuries. The top offensive players stink right now. They have scored 17 goals in 10 games. Arnott has 5 points and is a minus 10. Parise has only 5 points. Elias, Langenbrunner and Zajac have 4 points. I know it's easy to blame Kovy, but watching this team he is about #12 on the list of problems this team has right now.

Can't say I'm disappointed to see them there though.

While all the other points you make are valid, this one is not. There's a psycholocial aspect of the game as well as a physical toll when a team can only put 15 skaters on the ice due to Cap issues. It may not be the primary reason for the slow star, but is sure seems like one of them to me.

October 29, 2010  10:23 AM ET

There is no way a 15 man roster is going to be successful in an 82 game league (especially with all the contact in hockey)...add to that the fact that the 100 million dollar man seems uninterested in playing hockey and this could be one ugly season.

Well, I just don't think he was given much choice, and once they were in for a penny, they were in for a pound.

They would have been better off with taking Gagne, or anyone not trying to break the back of a team, as opposed to enhancing it. Injuries are hampering them right now, but Kovy, for what he's being paid, should be scoring, and creating a helluva lot more, as well as Parise.

This was a mess from the get go, and was thinking all along that the plan Lou had was done when the NHL finished with the 1st contract. I honestly thought it was more of a point maker, then they chased him, and signed him for a whopping 2 or 3 mil.......OVERALL!!! Blah blah blah blah blah blah mess!

October 29, 2010  11:00 AM ET

*signed for 2, or 3 mil less

They have played with a full roster minus one or two games because of all the injuries. In fact they have plenty of cap space because of Rolston being on LTIR.

They played with a short roster for a game or two. So I am not sure how they are playing 82 games with 15 men. And the 100 million man is one of the only players who is actually contributing. I know because I watch the team, not just read the T&R

October 29, 2010  11:45 AM ET

Kovy has 6 points (3G, 3A) in 9 games and is a -4 i think. That's decent production but not for his 6.6 million cap hit it isn't. You pointed out the Danny Briere contract the other day, here's some fun facts...Briere has 6 goals and 2 assists for 8 points in 9 games with a +2 and a cap hit of 6.5 million. I think the comparison is interesting.

How many of the AHL guys that they brought up to fill out their roster are really NHL ready? A few guys that the coach sent down after camp are now playing again. Could that be a contributing factor?

exactly ... Kovy isn't the #1 problem - any team signing him would have been buyer-beware.
It is just easy to point at him b/c of the contract and apparent lack of singular production
