City gives into Lowe's owner

Concord, N.C.'s planning and zoning commission unanimously gave its blessing to a controversial drag strip near Lowe's Motor Speedway Tuesday night, the latest move by the city to try to keep the track from leaving. Speedway owner Bruton Smith now said there is was a "90%" he would move his track out of Concord for another site around Charlotte. Smith's comments to the Observer on Monday are the latest twist in an episode that began when the city of Concord moved to stop work on a $60 million drag strip on speedway property. After the City Council's Oct. 1 vote to rezone the property to ban drag strips, Smith threatened to move the track. Last week, the city reversed its position on the drag strip and started talking about offering incentives to help reduce noise from the drag strip, a concern among neighbors. Smith said he would feel obligated to buy back the 52 condominiums at the speedway from their owners. A final decision on the move won't be made until after the Concord City Council revisits the issue Oct. 26, Smith said.

Move it Bruton, screw them. Stand your ground. The city is just like the jackass's running nascar, they only care about money and if you move the track they will loose it.

I broke this news yesterday - I am the king of truth and rumors.
He is a billionaire terrorist....he has the resources to move it and then will probably make more money by doing so. I like the old track and it is pretty close to the teams where it is. Its right in HMS backyard. Trash the tradition Bruton - thats what Nascar is all about.

Bruton: "does all this money make me look fat?"

October 17, 2007  04:05 PM ET

Jackmanrob is right. Ol' Uncle BS (Bruton Smith) cried, whined and threatned Concord to get his way. Why is it that Lowe's can't even come close to a sellout for one of the most exciting races we've had in the Chase so far?

October 17, 2007  04:35 PM ET

Red Zone = darn good question,it makes you wonder =
I like your profile = more people 'should' get involved in there
perspective sports, = no matter what sport it is.

That town has taken so many hits - this would be really tough. The track had planned renovations too. That was a great race - not sure how short they were for sell out...saw some empties in the "Family Section" and backstreach. Even the folks that live near the track want to make concessions. He really is terrorizing the town - but he has the bucks.

Unfortunately this is the path the whole city of Charlotte has taken - get rid of all the old stuff and build all new. Take a trip to the northern cities...they are keeping the historic neighborhoods - here they are gone!

(funny oldskool!!!!)

I think he looks like Mickey Rooney in that picture. LOL

October 17, 2007  05:27 PM ET

Ok Guys,
More to the point....should he or shouldn't he move the track? Does a move benefit NASCAR and/or the fans? I'm not really sure after reading the posts whether you guys support a move or not.

It should stay where it is. Its a historic track. Those turns are perfect and racing is exciting there. If anything add some more fan attractions around the track and "pretty" the structure up. Considering the approx 150k people there for the big races the traffic really isnt that bad! Its centrally located for all the teams.

Bruton is in his 80's. Sure he is getting wooed by surronding areas, but enviromental studies, conservationists, extremely fast growing area with housing developments will slow the project down for years. (Come to think of it - real estate is taking a hit - sure thats what he is thinking). He could build the ideal track with all the bells and buzzers like the Vegas deal and still attract more fans.

I vote stay shynloco.
