08:08 AM ET 11.03 | "Unbelievable," Edgar Reneria would say later. Turns out, Renteria's story is more unbelievable than anyone knew. Amid the dewy celebration, Giants trainer Dave Groeschner revealed that Renteria came within an eyelash of being replaced on the postseason roster after popping his left biceps tendon in Game 2 of the NL division series against the Atlanta Braves. Renteria sat in an MRI chamber at 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 9, assuming his season -- and probably his career -- was over. "We were talking about what we'd do on the roster," Groeschner said. "It was torn all the way through."

Couldn't believe he won the MVP. Should have been Lincecum.

This is not news. We knew this already. Wasn't it commented on during the NLCS?

Edgar's the man! Karma came back and paid him off for all the good deeds he does for the poor in Colombia.

"This story was more unbelievable than anyone knew"... Except that everyone knew he was playing with a partially torn bicep in September that they tore completely so that he could play with less discomfort. When did we know this? 3 weeks ago, during the division series. Glad SI got the scoop.

Edgar deserved to win the MVP! His defense was phenomenal, and he came through with big at bats to help his pitchers win!

yeah, that was obviously a sentimental vote--the way selig presented it almost sounded like a lifetime acheivement award. but hard not to be happy for renteria, by all accounts one of the good guys in the game. but yeah, the guy who beat cliff lee twice was obviously a pretty valuable member of the squad.

what's with the bigoted comments re: guillen? the guy was born and raised in venezuela. given that i actually think his english is pretty good. and even if his english is not good, who cares? sick of people equating ability to speak english with righteousness. it's a language, one of literally thousands spoken on this planet. nothing less, nothing more. and not a barometer of moral standing.

Hard to root for him after that abysmal season he spent in Detroit... for which was traded for a soild Jair Jurrgens. :/

Even if the story is late, it bears repeating: Way to go Edgar. Way to go Giants!

There are still people saying the Rangers are favorites to win the WS. Word has it, that Gee Dubya has asked Poppy if he can get his Supreme Court to overturn Game 5.

Several SI and ESPN writers had the Giants rated the worst playoff team when the playoffs started. I couldn't see that. The Braves were clearly the worst with some major injuries that caused starting rotation and lineup issues coming down the stretch. I didn't see the Giants getting past the Phillies, but if you've got pitching, you've got a shot.

I'm thinking of naming my son Edgar as a tribute to great baseball and the Dominican Republic.

Same goes for the Rangers. Keep in mind that once the world series started, the announcers leaned heavily torward's the Giants all series. As for the media, they wanted New York vs Philly. Thank god we didn't have that again.

HERE IN SAN FRANCISCO and I THINK I CAN SPEAK FOR MOST OF US,EVEN IF WE AREN'T ALL THE BIGGEST SPORT FANS,that THE GIANTS ,as..WE IN SF ARE MOSTLY A BUNCH OF MISFITS[NOT ALL],BUT AS A CITY BUILT ON DIVERSITY..THEY ARE ALL MVPS AND GREAT ATHELETES..ALONG WITH ALL AROUND,ACTUALLY NICE GUYS.FROM RENTERIA,TO ROSS,TO BAUMGARTNER..AND OKAY,I THINK LINCECEUM IS CUTE..OH!AND THE PERSONALITY OF WILSON..THEY DESERVE THE TITLE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.THANKS GIANTS FOR MAKING SF PROUD,even with all the derogratory comments from non-SAN FRANCISCIANS,THEY PROVED YOU WRONG!

November 3, 2010  11:07 PM ET

Hard to fault the pick of Renteria though personally I thought Lincecum should have won it. He did get hit hard in game one though even if he won. Huff and Ross also came up big as did Cain and Bumgarner. No one Giant was dominant in the series so a tough choice. Probably the best choice was to give the award to the whole bull pen.
