08:08 AM ET 11.03 | Derek Jeter isn't likely to go anywhere, but the road to his return may come with some bumps along the way. During his interview with 1050 ESPN, [Hal] Steinbrenner acknowledged that drawing a line in the sand with a player of iconic stature such as Jeter can be risky. "There's always the possibility that things could get messy," Steinbrenner said. "Our fans are very emotional and that's what we love about them, but I've got to try to do my job on behalf of the partnership and everybody involved in the organization. Hank and I need to keep a level head and realize that we're running a business here."

Last I checked, Jete hasn't proposed to Minka. If I'm wrong please forgive my ignorance.

Don't forget that Jeter is still a major league baseball player. That means he won't leave one cent on the table regardless of his 2010 production. As long as A-Rod is making $30M, Jeter isn't going to settle for a pay cut.......This will get messy.

I'm kind of suprised by your post....I've watched Jeter from his first day as a Yankee and I dont ever remember a time anyone besides himself, handled his affairs.

Jeter has been single until recently...

... married life does have an impact.

Ask Mike Tyson...

the question really has more to do with how much merchandise and how many tickets the yanks will sell with jeter's name on it as he approaches 3k hits...he brings in a lot of dough for the yanks so paying him $20MM per year is a good business investment for them.

Indeed...

... Jeter is not getting his salary reduced.

i head it also....the press took about 4 words from the interview and ran with it b/c they know it will generate a lot of interest.

Exactly.

It wouldn't be the first time that's happened...

... again, ask Mike Tyson lol

QUOTE(#20):

Jeter is not stupid, he is not arod and he is the most popular and accomplished yankee over the last 50 years, he will be in the yankee FUTURE plans for the next 50 yearsIt is IRRELEVANT how much he makes as there is no salary capIf he makes 15, 20 or 30 mil......how does it affect anything? The yanks could still go out and sign lee and crawford if they want toits the yankees, not the kc royals

Its just a question of how much Hal wants to pay for good press. If Jeter asks for 5 years at $20M per does he get it?

i agree, this could get ugly because they want to pay him 10-15 mil and he will be looking for 15-30 mil. That gap will be hard to come to an agreement especially because Arod who took drugs is getting paid a and Jeter the Yankees Icon wants his dues. This will be interesting
