Cap presenting nightmares across NHL?

08:37 AM ET 11.03 | Unintended consequences are part of any sweeping change, but the implications of the NHL's salary cap can push teams away from competing. With [Zach] Parise, [New Jersey] can call up, sign or acquire players with salaries equal to his $5 million paycheque, but only during his absence. So even if there was, say, a $4 million forward out there to be had by trade, dealing for such a player would only worsen the Jersey cap nightmare when Parise returns. So the star goes down, and there's basically nothing to be done.

Move the team north so Marty can retire at home in Quebec.

Hey ****, how's that cap idea looking now?

November 3, 2010  08:55 AM ET

there are obviously ways to have a playoff caliber team every year, and still have the cap - NJ just finally got caught in the "trap"

I still hate the cap, btw.

Butt-ramm would never admit that the cap was a not-so-great idea.

There are a few teams that have trouble with the Cap. New Jersey and Philadelphia come to mind, but most of the teams seem to be dealing with it and still finding ways to win. Now if the Wings start having cap problems . . . . . .

true that - if the golden boys of the cap started having issues, Buttman would actually have to "take another look at it"

Cap needs to be fine tuned. Some kind of balance between NBA's Larry Bird exception, and MLB's luxury tax. The NHL simply doesn't have the revenue stream for the hard cap.

I can see by your avatar that the cap is having a serious effect on you Canuck! Be careful.

I think the Cap is a good idea, it levels the playing field for the teams, it won't allow for a team to be the Yankees of the NHL. But it does need to be adjusted. In the Devils case, maybe they shouldn't have signed Kovalchuk.

Thanks for the advice Slappy. I still have the BB thong in reserve.

I wouldn't have the cojones to give you advice Canuck. matter of fact, now that I hear you have the thong in reserve, just carry on............the current one isn't so bad! :-).

LMAO...the one and only time I used that one, some guy (?) sent me an FM wanting to know where I got it. It was kinda creepy really.

Actually, Ed Snider is one of the golden boys in the commish's eyes. And, even tho the Flyers are a bit cap constrained, they are doing well this year. It's the Devils that are having the biggest problem and it directly relates to Kovalchuk's contract.

As Hank isn't here, shall we start the chant?

Kill the cap......

Creative and true.

I believe the appropriate response to any thread about the cap is some where along the lines of "Kill the cap, slit its throat and drink its blood" I might be paraphrasing though.

Precisely.

Lou screwed the pooch with the Kovy deal so the Devils are a very poor example to use. Most of the teams are doing just fine with it.

You're right on. While a cap of some sort needs to be in place I personally would like to see some adjustments made ASAP. For example, allow the cap to be surpassed but impose a luxury tax equal to at least the amount of the violation..................maybe more. The fine to be increased each year the violation exits. Penalize the violater by removing a draft choice for each violation as well. Obviously I haven't thought it through, but simply allowing (forcing) teams to play with fewer players isn't the answer. That hurts the players on the team and makes competition a joke sometimes, e.g. NJ so far.
