08:58 AM ET 11.03 | Bobby Holik believes the unraveling Devils are more a result of Ilya Kovalchuk's contract than John MacLean's coaching. In an interview on Off The Record, the recently retired 18-year NHL veteran, who played 11 of those seasons in New Jersey, said he doesn't believe MacLean is all to blame for the team's woeful start. "I think he's in a very tough spot," Holik said. "Maybe I called for some coaches to be fired from the past. I would not ... not comment on (if I would fire him). He was put in a tough spot by management signing Ilya Kovalchuk for such a long term deal."

Exactamundo! Uncle Lou screwed the pooch on this one.

It's bad when staying in Atlanta would have been a better career move.

Yup, and now everyone is hurting on the team because of trying to compensate, on top of injuries, which helps create more injuries.....

Circa first time around Devils Holik was one of my favorite players, however after his Rangers contract how can he speak about under preforming on Large contracts? (I know there was no cap implication then, but teams still have budgets)

Or simply not being so damn greedy! How much money is enough?

Can't they find another picture of Kovalchuk?

It's about time everyone to get off the Devils overspending mishap...
Kovy, even scoring 1-2 goals a night would not be lifting this team to the top of the East, right now.
Yes, Lou Lou handcuffed them from being able to make roster moves, and Parise being hurt is not going to help at all. But it is not like the whole rest of the team is showing up playing their a55es off, either

Its because they overspent on Kovy they had to get rid of or just not sign other talented players. As a result Kovy has to score 1-2 goals a night to carry the team and he isn't even close to that. Through 12 games he has 3 goals and 3 assists. He's also a minus 5 and is averaging less than 3 shots per game. That is second or third line at best. I don't know what he's like in the locker room, but I'll bet he isn't exactly encouraging his teammates.

And when you get blanked by the Nucks you know you're in trouble.

Loved Holik as a Whaler traded for Sean Burke and that was that.

I disagree. These guys have been playing without, and it's been because of Kovie, and injuries, and the trades they made on the blue line. Brodeur is having trouble getting consistent play in front of him. No he hasn't been his ALL STAR best, but this team has struggled since day1 of the season.

The loss of Parise is huge! 3 months!!!!!

No one. His agent took care of that part of the negotiations.

It's the only one they have with him in a Devils' uni and the puck actually on his stick...

I think one of him in the press box in his street clothes would be appropriate.
