Source: Yankees to pitch Lee early

09:22 AM ET 11.06 | While the Yankees believed there were multiple serious suitors for CC Sabathia and they wanted to wow their competition with a $140 million offer that was then the biggest-ever for a pitcher, they now believe the Texas Rangers are their only real rivals for Cliff Lee. There is, perhaps, less urgency to make a preemptive strike. Still, the Yankees "will be in early with Lee," said a baseball official with knowledge of their plans. "I don't know if they'll make an offer right away, but they'll be in quickly."

Lets hope the team that buys championships doesn't get him.

You mean boston? The angels? How many 'home grown' players were on the first red sox championship team? One? Lol

You can't purchase all of the best free agents, win the most championships and then complain that someone is calling the way it is.

I don't think Yankee fans complain, they just point out that they're not alone.

Maybe not 2004, but in the last 7 or 8 years the Sox farm has produced as many top players as anybody...........Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholz, Pappelbon, Bard and Hanley Ramirez, who they traded to aquire Josh Beckett.

Don't get me wrong, they still spend when they need to, but they have as many home grown stars as anybody right now.

One does not need to be a "baseball official" to know this. Good grief!

Lee will be true and stay in Texas just a wild guess.

True to who? Lee doesnt owe Texas anything. He only played there a couple of months.

People can laugh all they want about the Rangers. Good lord I laughed plenty during the previous ownership. But that was then and this is now and if you take the Rangers lightly you will get bit in the a/s/s as the Yankees already found out in early July by a team in bankruptcy court.

Im not complaining....just pointing out that other teams do the same thing......How many 'homegrown' guys were on your sox first championship team?Last year, 1/2 of NYs starting regulars and basically their whole bullpen were homegrown. YES ABSOLUTELY NY bought pitchers and hitters, but every team does the same thing, I don't wamt to hear the whining that ONLY the yankees buy FAs

I agree with you. But there needs to be parity in MLB. A true salary cap. Look how well the NFL has done with it. Even though they are trying to get rid of it. Every team has a true chance to win. Not just the teams with their own cable tv companies.

Hater, If you had a successful franchise you would expect them to spend money to continue the process. That is how you become successful in building a dynasty.

How naive can you be? Lee has resisted all offers to make sure he became a FA? Why? to be true to the Rangers? I don't think so. Now if the Rangers pony up the most cash, then he'll be true.

The complaint here is that in other sports you have to draft well, develop talent, make smart trades and hire great coaches to build a dynasty. Only in baseball can one team draft and develop talent poorly, have medicore management and make up for it by opening up the wallet to the tune of double most franchises. And btw, still not win all the time.

if not team will put any interest to try to sign lee then his tag price would be 15 million pr season, but because there's always some teams that they believe they can outbid the yankees, then that's those teams fault that a player like lee or any one else!

Players just owe the responsibility of giving max effort for their salary...

... as long as they are doing that, they're doing their job.
