06:31 AM ET 10.19 | The way I hear it, Phil Jackson banned Kobe Bryant from being around the Lakers Tuesday when his petulant VIP - offended that owner Jerry Buss alerted the Los Angeles media he was available in an equitable trade - informed him he wouldn't be practicing, for the third straight day, because he wanted to rest his legs, knee, bruised ego, whatever. "I don't want you riding the exercise bike in front of the team," Jackson hipped Bryant, according to a source. "There's nothing wrong with your legs. I need you to be part of the team. I need to come to practice and work hard. And I need you to come to games and play defense." Last season, Inaction Jackson felt Bryant had gotten a little lazy on the sidelines and at practice. In his considered opinion, he and his coaching staff were too easy, too soft on the players, especially Mr. Big Stuff.

"And I need you to come to games and play defense." Well, he's already doing that since he's a great defender. But, c'mon Kobe, how much trouble are you trying to get into before the season even starts???

vecsey is annoying isn't he.

if it did happen....then phil is just trying to blow smoke to try and keep the rest of the team in line.

otherwise its vecsey trying to start some static.

Like when a hater in your crew says " I heard billy bob said somethin about your sister...."

Note to Bulls...do not and i repeat do not trade for this cancer called Kobe.

October 19, 2007  09:22 AM ET

The New York Post has no credibility at all. Take this story with a grain of salt.

October 19, 2007  09:46 AM ET

Lakers looked pretty good against the Sonics yesturday. Bynum better live up to his promise of this being "his year" if there's any chance of the Lakers doing well/Kobe staying.

October 19, 2007  09:52 AM ET

trade him

October 19, 2007  10:08 AM ET

They didnt BAN him from practice, Kobe didnt want to practice, after DUMB **** BUSS decided to make another comment after they agreed nothing else would become public. This is the entire reason that Kobe is mad in the first place. Lakers Insiders (aka management) cant keep their mouths shut about the situation. Phil didnt want him sitting on the bike in front of the team and the 35 reporters at the lakers practice facility. so he said to not show up at all. If trading bryant is a "business decision" how did buss get to own the lakers because he is obviously the worst businessman ever. Also, whats the deal with him saying " we cant keep too many loyalties' what loyalties have you kept??? Everybody said kobe should never had said anything. This is just business to Buss, its LIFE to kobe.

Zen toughguy?

October 19, 2007  10:17 AM ET

They should roll out the red carpet for this guy. HE WAS THE LAKERS LAST YEAR. Without Boy Dynamo, that franchise is going to be gutter ball for years.

October 19, 2007  10:18 AM ET

I know NYT isn't reliable...but then again, there is no smoke w/o a fire

October 19, 2007  10:24 AM ET

This guy is not a cancer...he is superstar on a sucky team that is not dedicated to not suck anymore. Bring him to the Mavs! We can part ways with Stackhouse and Jason Terry for him.

October 19, 2007  10:25 AM ET

FAN NATION , yea, in real life there is no smoke without fires. The problem is that the Sports section in your local newspaper lives in SPECULATION LAND, where smoke magically pours from the mouths of bitter writers.

and my newspaper

Peter Vescey might be annoying, but he's the NBA savant of the New York Post. He writes that Jackson is trying to get the entire coaching staff to not be lazy and to not allow the players to be lazy. So he tells Kobe he's not welcome at practice if he's not putting effort into it. Sounds quite reasonable to me.

October 19, 2007  10:54 AM ET

This is all public relations 101. Last year, Jackson couldn't tell Kobe what he thought about his poor attitude because he was untouchable. Now, after a summer of embarassing the Laker's front office and ownership, all bets are off. Jackson has been given permission by Mr. Buss to publicly question Kobe's desire and work ethic in order to sway fans into thinking it would be good to deal Kobe. This is the beginning of the end for Mr. Bryant in Laker gold.
