Burke keeping Wilson safe as coach

09:06 AM ET 11.08 | Ron Wilson, by virtue of his position, will always be in the cross hairs. The first line has been producing like a fourth unit so what's the solution? Fire the coach. The highly touted rookie hasn't developed enough so he had to be sent to the minors to learn how to be a pro and what to do? Fire the coach. The team loses five in a row (the better part of three of those without the captain) and the public has spoken. Fire the coach. Welcome to Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke's world after a crazy week, one in which he has had to defend both his since injured captain Dion Phaneuf and his coach, Ron Wilson. It's part of the deal in a hockey first city where the team has lost five in a row, but fire Wilson now? Seriously? ... It???s ridiculous that he even has to go there at this point, but Burke made it clear how absurd he feels about the notion of getting rid of Wilson. "A coaching decision has not been considered, let alone discussed," Burke said.

I don't believe that for a second... if Burkie thought he could lure a better coach right now, he would.

How'd this Cowboys story get mixed into the hockey section?

November 8, 2010  09:18 AM ET

Working for Brian might not be the biggest attraction to lure a coach.

You know, I really wish Burke would stop calling things the fans say and do as "Ridiculous", "Absurd", and "Pathetic". A simple denial works. You wanna subjugate anybody to these verbal attacks based on the opinions of other human beings, attack the press. They're used to it. You do NOT attack your fan base, especially one as loyal as Leafs Nation, especially not one that has been waiting for six years for a playoff berth, ESPECIALLY not one you were brought in to please by obtaining a Stanley Cup that hasn't been won there for 43 years. I've usually been quick to defend Burke, and even Wilson, but if I continually see the GM attacking his team's fans rather than unproductive, unmotivated, unaccountable players, i'm going to lose sympathy for him rather quickly.

Some might say that it is "Ridiculous", "Absurd" and "Pathetic" that Leafs fans pay the ticket prices they do to go watch them play...Some might say!

And shouldn't protection from the GM's verbal attacks be included in that astronomical price? Just sayin'

Just listen to Burkie...he knows what's best for you.

Consider it separate...Like sales tax or an extended warranty. The total cost just keeps adding up.

I'm surprised that he hasn't barred any local scribes like he did in Vancouver for calling him on the teams shortcomings

November 8, 2010  11:43 AM ET

Like fourth liners that's not nice they are third liners playing against the other teams checking line the fourth liners are playing on the second line

There's a caveat on the back of your ticket -

Burkie's Commandments.

- Honour thy GM and Coach.
- Do not swear falsely by the name of your Captain.
- Do not covet thy opponents 1st line centre.

Being a GM and having Wilson as your coach isn't a slice either. Laverne and Shirley deserve each other.

Sounds logical. I sort of liked Wilson when he was in Washington. He got us to the Cup Finals in 1998. Lost in 4 to the Wings of course but they were the better team and we had ridden Olie as far as he could carry us. As a non-Canadian I don't have the knowledge or insight to comment intelligently on Burke and the Toronto situation (I know, I know, being ignorant has never stopped me before)!

I'm pretty sure Burkie has duel citizenship so feel free to comment. And as for needing knowledge or insight, it's never stopped Burke from speaking up so why should it stop you Slappy. :-)

I'd rather have people just be fairly sure I was an idiot instead of speaking out and removing all doubt! Anyway, I'll let the Leaf fans settle the Burke and Wilson controversies, Lord knows they've had a few dry years to think about it and I'll just try to listen and learn.

I too defend Burke, as he usually stands up for his players, but I have to agree, that some of what he says about the fans is "ridiculous" "absurd" and sometimes even "Pathetic".

No you don't attack Leafs Nation, and Wilson is just lucky that Burke is in love with him, or he'd be gone!

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Sutter and McTavish took teams to the final and we know they are not geniuses. Your old buddy Tommy McVie was a hockey guru compared to Burke;)

Aaah, a name from the past! I liked Tommy. Who knows what he was punished for by leading those teams?
