08:22 AM ET 11.09 | In the wake of a report that Colorado will fire Dan Hawkins, a new boss -- same as an old boss -- has emerged as a contender to lead the Buffaloes. Former CU coach Bill McCartney, who led the Buffs to a national championship, will be a strong candidate to succeed Hawkins, but other candidates from around the country will be considered, sources said. McCartney retired from coaching in 1994. ... Asked whether he would be a candidate for the job, McCartney said, "If Colorado was interested in me, I would definitely be interested in returning."

Why Why Why???

It would be interesting to see what McCartney could do in this day and age. He would be more dependent on his assistants than most coaches because of his time away from the game and kids not knowing him.

Firing Hawkins is a good move. Bringing McCartney back is not. Time to cut bait and move on with a younger coach.

New blood is needed. Snyder's success at KSU is an anomaly.

Just because they beat Texas doesnt mean they(KSU) are back, at least not this year.. They got smoked by OSU. Jury is still out on Snyder, but he is better than what he replaced. Colorado needs to quit being cheap and go find a legit coach. TCU, BYU, BSU, UH, on and on and on, would be more quality teams than Colorado. Just goes to show how bad Georgia is this year.

As a CU grad, I can tell you they will never win until it becomes important to the administration. And it never will be!

Hawkins is cooked, CU sucks (its a shame for a storied program from the Big 8). Somebody tell me why Cam Newton hasnt already been suspended from the Auburn program. Allegations of money being asked for during recruitment and now academic violations (cheating) at UF.. Auburn needs to protect themselves with this situation and sit the kid down so that they dont forfeit any games going forward from this point. Once you know about it, if you dont do anything about it, you own it.

Then you do remember the good years when CU played for Conference championships and beating NU meant it was a good season.. There was a lot of pride there in the past and I have to wonder if the administration has just leaned so far to the liberal end that football will never be a consideration again. The PAC 10 knew what they were doing going for CU, they need another doormat for USC and Oregon to get some easier wins. I wish CU would return to the philosophy that students attend a university also because they have pride in the athletics. (Clearly its not the only reason and academics SHOULD be the primary reason) As a Big 12 fan, i want NU to go beat up the Big 10 teams. I dont see that as an option in Boulder with respect to their new conference.

Watch them end up hiring Mike Leach.

Did Bill McCartney really lead them to a "NC".

"NC" is right. With the quotation marks. Maybe a couple of asterisks and footnotes too.

One outright loss, one game that everyone knows they lost but was still somehow recorded as a win, a tie, plus a penalty on the Rocket Ismail return that, while not the worst call in big-call history, could also have been ignored...

McCartney accomplished a lot and had some good teams. But meh to that title. MEH.

Can't see this as a good idea, BTW. The guy hasn't been near a sideline in more than a decade. I know the NCAA and NFL are worlds apart, but look at how well that worked for Joe Gibbs up in DC. Plus it has that stopgap, desperation feel - leaning on the old glories.

Were I in Colorado athletics, I would consider this...with a firm succession plan...for 5-10 minutes.

Rumor here in Colorado is McCartney is going to take over with Dave Logan as his top assistant with Logan taking over in a couple of years which....goes over well here in Colorado. EVERYONE has wanted Logan to take over for years. The Les thinkg has me a little uneasy and I can't see Colorado paying his price. Then again? $6 million buyout to leave the conference while raising tuition? Never say never.

that isnt the rumor that is A RUMOR anddave logan sucks... NOONE WANTS DAVE LOGAN... you in fact may be the only person who wants that sleeze
