Giguere left scratching head after Leafs' shutout

08:30 AM ET 11.10 | Their coach went easy on the Leafs; their goaltender did not. After a game as ugly as [Tuesday night's] 4-0 loss to the Lightning, one would expect Leafs coach Ron Wilson to come out guns ablazing, ripping his team's performance and calling out his stars. Instead, the coach was rather understated, and it was the players themselves who offered the harshest criticisms of their play, with veteran netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere leading the way. "We didn't compete," Giguere said. "You knew they were going to be ready, they got beat pretty bad the last game on the road ... You've got to be aware of these things. I don't know. I'm a bit lost. I don't know what to say. We're just going to have to regroup."

"Ripping his team's performance and calling out his stars"

I didn't realize the Leafs had any stars.

What does spam and Kessel's last 7 games have in common? They're pointless.

November 10, 2010  10:18 AM ET

It's starting to look like last year all over again....Burke and Wilson have not got the job done and one (or both) of them should go. Burke trades away high picks for a short term solution in Kessel and Wilson throws his players under the bus to the media every chance he gets.

Haha, good point Golden Bay. On both fronts, actually.

How much slack are they really going to give Wilson? There is obviously something wrong with the job he is doing, yet buddy Burke keeps blaming everyone BUT him.

To be fair, Phaneuf is Burke's doing, not Wilson's, but, honestly, everybody who watches NHL hockey thought this team had its defence figured out. On paper, before the season started, many thought this was the strongest lineup of defencemen in the league. Now its a group of underachievers, almost all of whom have regressed. We all know about Phaneuf's steady regression over the last 2-3 years, but then you have to look at Komisarek and Beauchemin. Both were considered high-end d-men when Burke signed them, and both have turned into liabilities. Now, either all 3 of these guys have quit caring about their performance now that they have their huge contracts, or, maybe, just maybe, Wilson is doing a poor job of coaching them - of working with their strengths and improving their weaknesses. I know this isn't a great team of forwards, but its not like Komisarek left a juggernaut when he walked away from Montreal. I don't really want to get into Jeff Finger, which was before Burke's time, but he WAS an NHL player when they signed him, regardless of the contract size. Now he's not good enough to be in the Show? There are only 2 things these 4 d-men have in common: All of em signed huge contracts, and all of their careers have suffered since being in Toronto. I have a hard time thinking that this many guys in the same place are tanking after signing so I'm gonna just go ahead and say that Wilson's system isn't working with them. He's not coaching to his player's abilities, and its hurting player and team development as a result.

Then of course, is their performance. Burke keeps saying that the media should eb blaming the players for the way they play, not the coach. Isn't it the coach's job to get the best out of his guys each and every game? To keep them motivated? Seems like this team has lost motivation 2 weeks into the season.

So if he's not motivating people, and he's not putting in a Game Plan that works for his personnel, what exactly IS he doing that lets him keep his job?

Well done. Your comments sound very logical. I have only seen the Leafs play on television so far this year but, on occasion, it seems they lack any sense of direction or plan. That's really not fair I guess since I don't see them often, but your comments about not coaching to the players' strengths makes a lot of sense to me.

November 10, 2010  02:21 PM ET

good point goCA - Burke seemed to grab a bunch of players he wanted, or thought he wanted - threw them at Wilson and said make me a winning team (the NY Rangers theory)...
and I agree - where is the team going direction wise? and I don't just mean the current losing streak

Who are these expert's who thought they had a top defense corp . Bet they all had Toronto postal codes Komisarek is a #4 at best D-man and has never been higher on his team than a #3. Beauchemin did not become a top 4 D-man till paired with Neidermeier w/the Ducks. He really is a #3-4 D-man also. Yes they have improved their D considerably. But then again there was lots of room for improvement

If he's scratching the head above his neck I suggest Head & shoulders or Kwellada. If it's the other head I suggest he go to a clinic they might have anti-biotics or a topical creme to cure that itch
