08:08 AM ET 11.11 | Troy Smith will likely get the start this weekend as Alex Smith has yet to be cleared. So what happens when the presumptive starter is cleared to resume practice? Singletary tried to defuse any bubbling quarterback controversy by saying he would go back to the Smith who started the first seven games of the season before busting his non-throwing shoulder at Carolina. "If Alex were healthy, I think right now he'd still be the quarterback," Singletary said. But, Alex Smith isn't healthy yet, which means Troy Smith probably will get one more chance to change Singletary's mind.

He looks happy in the pic

And that, kids, is why the 49ers suck.

He looks like he's searching for his beer card.

Alex, Troy. It's till a Smith.

Don't the Smith Brothers make cough drops? The Niners could use some to stop them from choking.

Does it really make a difference?

Yes, Alex Smith has really shown his ability to lead this team to victories ...

mr smith or mr smith? give me mrs smith (angelina jolie) anytime...

I was thinking of all the "Mr. Smith's" in The Matrix. Which brings us to Keanu Reeves. And that inevitably starts the chants of "Falco, Falco, Falco...."

Why is it that marginal professional teams continue to dominate these threads on a daily basis?

Alex Smith is a number 1? Well, I suppose the rest of the team is a number 2, then.

Hasn't Alex had a long enough audition? Things can't be any worse giving Troy a few starts so you can determine which one will be next year's back-up.

November 11, 2010  09:08 AM ET

Just give it to Troy

November 11, 2010  09:08 AM ET

Niner's are one of the teams, that could. but just can't get there crap together.

In that case, they could fire Mike Singletary and hire Wade. And nothing would change.

Pretty much.

yes that team sure looks and smells like a #2

I think Singletary should let Troy finish out the season - I mean really, what's the worst that can happen?

I don't really think the problem was with Alex. Nate Clements single handedly lost them that game against Atlanta (who oh by the way is 6-2). Just because the team has sucked doesn't mean it is always the QB's fault. You could stick any qb down in Carolina and that team would still be garbage. Definitely give Alex a chance to start again.
