08:21 AM ET 11.11 | Catcher could become a position immediately in flux for Boston should Victor Martinez not return. The Red Sox are expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of free-agent catcher John Buck in the likely event that [Martinez] signs elsewhere, according to two baseball sources. The Red Sox, according to one of the sources, expect the Detroit Tigers to make a major push for Martinez, who could share catching duties with second-year man Alex Avila while also sharing first base and DH duties with Miguel Cabrera. The Baltimore Orioles also have significant interest, and the Texas Rangers also are expected to be among the bidders.

I don't think the Sox want to pay Victor anything but DH money for most of his next contract. They see him as a catcher for maybe 1 more year, then replace Papi at DH.............

in all honestly, i think they see vmart as a stupid moron that will accept a 2 yr deal. if they really want to bring him back they never would've offered a 2 yr deal. he's as good as gone.

They offered him a 2 year deal, because they don't see him as their long term catcher. And that's how he wants to be paid. I don't blame, he's a great hitting catcher, but only a good hitting DH. I'd love to see him stay, but not as my catcher or 1B. He's a DH.

Yea why would the Red Sox wanna commit money to a player that ONLY hits then sits on his **** the rest of the game. They have that spot covered

he won't be back...he could play 1B also. perhaps my "stupid moron" comment was spot on. guy can't realize that being a part time C, 1B & DH actually provides a lot of value.

Versatility isn't cool anymore. Teams find their cash is better used for players that hit .250 but look good on magazines

If he was a average catcher, with his bat, he would likely command $15M a year. As a DH, which he really is then he's worth $10M. So you can see why he wants catcher money. I think Boston was willing to give him catcher money, but only for 2 years.

Well, if you wanna nitpick about it, he was featured on the January issue of Hogfarmer Digest. He was wallowing around in a mud pool with Josh Beckett

I agree...there are also some folks that cherish burning leaves so much they want the freedom to do so. Ironic however, on my street you cant burn leaves or leave your trash in a can for the morning pickup, but the spacemonkey that lives across the street can burn his hash without reprisal and rummage through my garbage at night.

They can chase who ever they want & over pay them. Fact is that they compete w/TB or the Yanks anymore. Time to clean house & rebuild.
