Jets point fingers at Man-genius

A season after making a surprise appearance in the playoffs with an up-and-coming coach nicknamed "Man-genius," the struggling 1-5 Jets appear to be coming apart -- especially when Eric Mangini's name, philosophy and tactics are brought up in the locker room. The first public announcement of discontent came last Sunday, when tight end Chris Baker criticized the play calls at the end of a 16-9 loss to the Eagles. But while Baker is the only player to have publicly voiced his displeasure, he isn't alone. There appears to be a growing disconnect between the players and the Jets coaching staff.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

It sounds much better when you read it with a Gomer Pyle voice.

Man-genius??? What a joke! The nfl's "rat" will be lucky to get a coordinators job after the jets go 1-15 this year
Any head coach would think hard about hiring a guy that "sold out" his mentor the way man-loser did, not that it was right what the pats did, but he didn't report anything when he was collecting wins from those tactics.

Wonder what Tony Soprano would say if he ran into him this time around
"Mangini, you cost me a lot of forking money."

"first public announcement of discontent"

came in the pre-season when he broke his offensive line to prove his point..

October 21, 2007  09:56 AM ET

he's the red headed stepchild who just can't live up to his old boss. so much bitching and whining to the nfl, then he wants to blame all their losses on the players or belichick or the weather in china or whatever the heck else he can come up with.

October 21, 2007  09:58 AM ET

The Jets don't have a healthy QB in Pennington to be a threat to beat anybody.....Vince Lombardi would have a losing record too.

October 21, 2007  10:12 AM ET

There's always a "disconnect" when a team isn't winning. Gotta blame somebody.

October 21, 2007  11:12 AM ET

The Jets are rebuilding. Mangini knows where he's taking this team. There is a plan in place. Mangini is finding young players that fit his system. It's not like the Jets are getting blown out every week either. All of their games have been very close with the exception of the game against the Patriots.

The Jets should start Kellen Clemens and if they can get a runningback(like Darren McFadden) via draft or free agency; their offense is set on paper. Then they can start to rebuild that defense.

October 21, 2007  11:13 AM ET

Oh, they be pointing a finger at him, behind his back. Better watch out Mangy....they are coming to get you.

Boston and its suburbs are a very special place. The people seem to love to hate. I don't think I've clicked on a single Patriots or Red Sox link ever, but these articles on the 1-5 Jets just fill up with Beanie **** postings.

As for the finger-pointing, if a losing team isn't reconsidering its leadership, their heads are full of rocks, and it's a testament to the class of the organization and the players that they haven't totally imploded like the Raiders did on Art Shell last year.

Larry, Bellicheck was the cheater.

Take a look at the offerings the T&R staff give us. sox blow out cleveland in game 6, schill pitches great, JD Drew hits a GS and we get 3 out of the 5 T&Rs are about the Yankees.
And we of Patriot nation have a keen interest in the demise of the rat and our division rivals.

October 21, 2007  11:34 AM ET

Jeez. What a bunch of snivelers. If you read the article, the complaints remind you of fifth grade, when you gave a thousand reasons to your parents why you got a D on a test you did not study for, did not take seriously, and blew off because you noticed, for the first time, that girls were, like, uh, er, well, stimulating somehow. Or was it first grade? Never mind. The point is, these whiners took no responsibility, accepted no accountability, and passed the buck like it was a bottle of Jack Daniels at a Klan Rally. Here s a thought. Do YOUR job.

Oh how we Jets fans love to lay blame. O'Brian, Testeverde, a few martyrs in our teams history. So, we are losing, again, like this is something new? Mangini of course will take alot of fllack, a far cry from all the praise last season. How about a little support? Let us not fall into the fair weather fan syndrome (patriot fans) at least we beat the Dolphins! lets save our disgust when it matters, draft day!

Even as a Pats fan, and even as distrustful of Mangini as I am, I still don't buy that this is all his fault. The Jets have had some rotten breaks go their way in games this year. The thing is, though, that there's still time to come back from this. When Brady replaced Bledsoe, the Pats had a TERRIBLE record, and they went on a ridiculous win streak and won the Super Bowl. I don't know that the Jets are going to win it all this year, but they're certainly not as bad as their record reflects.

Still, if they keep losing and the players keep griping, you have to figure that Mangini is gone, and that's a shame because -- right or wrong -- he's not going to get another coordinator's job in this league for a LONG time. He'll be lucky to be the Defensive Backs coach somewhere. As people have pointed out, even coaches who hate the Pats and want them to pay for CameraGate still aren't going to hire a guy they can't trust. Unfortunately, Mangini put himself in a no-win situation with the ratting out.

Man-genius turn to dumb boy in a hurry, didn't he? (DC)

October 21, 2007  02:45 PM ET

A 1-5 team needs a scapegoat, and players never blame themselves. Unfortunately, Mangini is the victim of poor Jet play.

I have this idea Pennington may have a solid year year next fall, IN MINNESOTA.
