08:04 AM ET 11.15 | In a game that was won by an ailing kicker and included Joe Staley playing on a broken left leg, there may be room for further fracture in San Francisco. The 49ers have no choice but to start Troy Smith. If they don't, players will revolt. Here's what Delanie Walker said about Smith. "It's like we are in the backyard and we're kids again and the street lights are about to come on and our moms are about to come out and we need to win this game and we got one play in us. I feel that's how he is. We are going to take it to the limit. He throws the deep ball, he takes chances." Shawntae Spencer: "I'm excited about him. We're all excited about him."

Hey - they found the right Smith to play QB. No reason to change players there...

November 15, 2010  08:09 AM ET

Who cares?

Troy deserves this chance and if he keeps playing this way, he will be the QB next year as well. However, that maybe contingent on Samurai Mike being the coach.

I don't see any signs of "revolting" in this article by the way.

Like sands though the hour glass so are the days of our lives.

What do we want?

Fat-free mocha decaf grande lattes!

When do we want them?

At practice and during half time!

Singletary is "revolting".

Why is this a controversy? Where is the fracture? The team seems to be united behing Troy Smith. It's a no-brainer: start Smith the remainder of the season, and if he continues to be successful on the field, trade Alex Smith in the off-season (to the Vikings) for a decent draft pick.

November 15, 2010  08:53 AM ET

Will anyone notice?

November 15, 2010  09:03 AM ET

Two wins in a row is an anomaly for this team. It would seem that continuing the things that led to this trend would be a very good idea.

November 15, 2010  09:15 AM ET

The only thing revolting about this is the article itself.

November 15, 2010  09:27 AM ET

By playing Troy Smith the 49ers will win a few more games and screw up their draft position for the new coach.

November 15, 2010  09:29 AM ET

Just what I didnt want to see; finding a fair to middle qb thats better than the junk we had, just good enough to beat the bad teams finally, making the season another 7-9 "promising end" and Sing and the rest get credit for "turning things around" "making progress!" and the rest of the stupid cliches 9er fans have had to put up with for the last 7 or so years. I suppose we'll also get bombarded now with the "we're gonna make the playoffs!" BS again from Sing and Yorkie. Blech

I agree with this other than the part about trading Alex Smith for a decent draft pick... the 9ers ain't getting squat for Smith anytime soon or ever, their only option is to release him. Smith will pretty much follow the career path of David Carr now...bounce around the league as a back-up.

Why does Singletary wear a stopwatch around his neck to games???

November 15, 2010  10:11 AM ET

Alex has let down niner fans for five years. Im over his subpar play. GIVE IT TO TROY! This is Singletarys only chance at saving his job anyway

He scouts the competition. When Alex Smith throws a pick he clocks the guy returning it. Then looks at the rest of his staff shrugs and says man that guy is fast.
