08:37 AM ET 11.15 | Sean Avery is at it again. [Ladislav Smid] skated across the rink to confront Avery after No. 16 rubbed out teammate Colin Fraser with a check against the wall. There seemed to be a couple of words exchanged before Smid began to skate away with his hands down, apparently believing the challenge he'd issued had been declined. [That's when Avery] popped him in the face and knocked Smid down to the ice, thus setting off a brawl that resulted in 126 minutes in penalties to eight players including Brandon Dubinsky, who was on the bench when he was grabbed by Fraser. ... "I think it was pretty gutless," said Steve MacIntyre, who was in the box at the time following his second fight with Derek Boogaard.

And this is news because . . . . . That seems to be standard operating procedure for Avery. Maybe the league should kind of step in and suspend the goon for a couple games to try to discourage this kind of behavior. Especially since Torts doesn't seem to mind.

I agree totally. Torts would be insanely upset if an opponent acted in the bush league, classless way that Avery does, and has for years.

The bum should be suspended, how is sucker punching someone even remotely acceptable? The "fight" is on YouTube, check that out. <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uf4PMje00ps&hl=en_US&feature= player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uf4PMje00ps&hl=en_US&feature=pl ayer_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

No surprise here, really, other than maybe that fact that it took this many games for Avery to get himself in the news for something other than good play

Calling Avery a goon is an insult to goons everywhere. Trust me i'm from philly, i know goons and Avery aint a goon. Goons have a code of honor about them. Avery's an ****-clown. Big difference.

I agree. Avery isn't a goon, he's a gutless punk. I have no respect for the Rangers in the first place for ever brining him back.......and now they should release him and rid the NHL of this piece of human garbage.

Smid should have known what he was getting himself into. You don't think everyone in the league is chomping at the bit to get a piece of Avery. Suprisingly, the confrontation was after a clean hit on Fraser. Smid should have know to either keep his guard up after the decline or just grab him and started throwing punches. You can't conform to any standard of etiquette with Sean Avery.

the whole league is a bunch of goons... and the nhl does nothing... thats why it's the fourth sport in the u.s. and will never be popular..... too bad too , cause there's some really exciting , skilled athlete's..... if they would clean up the crap, the nhl would be awesome too watch... now it's just awesome to watch for people who like that crap....

Im sure Avery and the Rangers are real torn up about losing TenRingsSTL's respect. Sean himself will be tossing and turning all night. Hopefully the $4 million annual salary will be enough comfort for him (half of which is being paid for and counts against Dallas' salary cap).

LOL! Now that's funny, and accurate about AVERY! :)

The league needs to sit his butt down for awhile. How clueless can the commish be to the bad rep he gives the league.

Have you ever watched a hockey game? To suggest that this is all that goes on in hockey just shows how little you know. Not only that but you nicely contradict yourself there. Is the NHL nothing but goons or are the some really skilled athletes? Can't have it both ways.

One day payback will come for this human **** stain...

Loved when Avery refused to fight Rutuu, and Rutuu taunted him from the bench, while play was going on on the ice. I believe it was OT and Pens scored while this was going on.
Funny stuff, but Avery's MO.

If you want to say Smid was silly for going after Avery after a clean hit, ok. The hit was clean, but Smid was fed up with his team getting crushed everywhere. He challenged Avery and Avery wouldn't do anything for like 5-10 seconds than when he started putting his gaurd down Avery jumped him. It was face to face but Smid was obviously no longer expecting the fight. Ranger fans can defend him all they want, but if the roles were reversed they would be screaming bloody murder. Avery should have either dropped the gloves right away or not fought.

I'm sure they are not torn up......but what the hell does that have to do with anything? The fact that Dallas paid this piece of crap $4M and then the Rangers thought it would be a good idea to bring him back is the issue. Why would the Rangers think it was a good idea to bring this no-talent ****-clown back into the NHL?

Fact is almost every fight starts with someone throwing a first punch, anyone who knows Aery keeps their guard up as he's known to be this way. Still not condoned

Avery gutless? A cheap shot artist? Who would have ever guessed?

November 15, 2010  10:56 AM ET

No one should be surprised by the actions of this gutless piece of dingo excrement. He's been doing it for years.

For as long as the league continues to allow this kind of cowardly, idiotic display of unsportsmanship by this particular moron, it will continue to have problems convincing folk their product is worth buying.

Don't get me wrong! I'm no shrinking violet. I love a good tusle. Bob Probert was my all time favorite. But, what this idiot does on a consistent basis, can only be described as repugnant and has no place in the NHL.

Well said.
