Cards looking to upgrade at short?

08:52 AM ET 11.15 | St. Louis is looking to squeeze some run production from its lineup -- or find additions to that lineup. If the Cardinals indeed realign their middle defense in the coming weeks, general manager John Mozeliak insists the club will more readily examine alternatives to Gold Glove contender Brendan Ryan at shortstop than second baseman Skip Schumaker or center fielder Colby Rasmus. Mozeliak called Rasmus "almost impossible to replace" given his production, potential and relatively low salary while admitting to strong support for Schumaker from manager Tony La Russa and his coaching staff.

Go get Renteria...

They should be looking to upgrade at 2nd - for all of Ryan's offensive faults, I'll take his glove IF they can fix second base!

I wouldn't mind seeing both positions upgraded, although there is likely not enough money to do both. Ryan's defense is good, but you simply can't have a guy in the lineup everyday that has a .275 OBP.

TLR always seems to have been in love with Skip. Hopefully if he is the guy at second, he will bounce back next year offensively.

A rabid Pomeranian would be an upgrade.

Not a hater - I loved when He was on the Cards - but they need someone younger and who isn't injury-prone!

As would I, Ten but you know as well as I that TLR will never admit to making a mistake (Schu) so we are stuck with him and yet, getting rid of Ryan doesn't make any sense since there aren't that many SS available

Pomeranians are quick and have great range. However, they tend to have very weak front paws.

I don't understand why the Cardinals aren't in the Dominican Republic combing the streets. You can buy 100 shortstops over there for cab fare & a sack of beans.

Tenacious fielders though, really go after that ball...

Careful. Zambrano would probably try to hit you with a bat if he heard you say that.

I feel like of the two, Skip is the one that needs to go...I know Ryan is terrible with the bat, but he's a plus on defense. Skip sucks both in the field, and at the plate. I mean if your options are sucky offense, good defense or sucky defense, sucky offense, shouldn't you keep the one that at least has one redeeming quality....

GET RID OF SCHUMAKER ! MO HAS NO GUTS ! HE IS SCARED OF TLR ! CARDS NEED A TRUE LEADOFF MAN ! SKIPPY SUCKS AT SEC. BASE AND AT LEADOFF! HE'S USELESS AS A STARTER AND THE ONLY REASON HE IS HERE IS THAT HE IS TONY'S LITTLE RAT BOY !! CORE PLAYER TONY CALLS HIM ! WHAT FREAKING JOKE ! YEAH, A RADIATOR CORE MAYBE ! HA HA

i think the cardinals should try and sign orlando hudson and then trade for stephen drew.hudson is a proven lead off hitter with gold glove defense and drew has proven himself to be a pretty decent hitter with good defense.
