08:23 AM ET 11.16 | Tre' Newton, a sophomore running back who made eight starts for the Longhorns, announced Monday that his football career was over, due reportedly to concussions throughout his life and because of the symptoms in their aftermath. Though Newton's teammates support his decision to quit football due to health reasons 100 percent, defensive backs Blake Gideon and Aaron Williams said that nothing would ever make them end their football careers. "I support Tre' but for me personally, I'd die on that field," Williams said. "I always go 100 miles per hour and will worry about all that health stuff 10 years from now when I'm done playing," Gideon said.

Sad story. I wish him the best in the future!

Sad story for Newton who made a very mature decision regarding his future. An even sadder story for Aaron Williams who may one day be fed through a straw at age 27.

Good luck, Tre. It's good to know everyone supports your decision to opt for quality of life. Multiple concussions are not something to ignore.

Good luck to Tre. He's on track to graduate in Dec 2011 with a 3.6 GPA. Bright future and smart kid. He's had concussions since playing at Southlake Carroll. Time to move on.

It's great to hear that he's a good student. I'm also glad he's smart enough to walk away from the game. Too many guys don't know when to call it quits.

So is Mack going to now dangle the ultimate carrot in front of another prized Texas schoolboy? I'm pretty sure that Tre' will be given a medical hardship scholarship.

And kudos to UT for honoring his scholarship.

Classy in a collegiate sports world where that isn't exactly the norm...

QUOTE(#10):

I find it encouraging that Tre's dad, a former NFL lineman and Dallas Cowboy great, fully supports his decision.

When ESPN asked his dad what he said to his son last year when it was announced he would be the starter, Nate said he told his son to forget all that and focus on making making straight "A's". Dad has made sure his kid has his head on straight.

"Retire" & "Texas" in the same headline and no mention of Mack???

November 16, 2010  10:03 AM ET

Good for the kid. Sounds like he has his head on straight.

Man you ain't kidding. That guy has no idea what he might be in for someday. Ahhhh the young.

At least there is a "Newton" in the news for the right reasons.

November 16, 2010  10:27 AM ET

It's a smart decision by the kid. He has a long life ahead of him and concussions are a great way to risk your future.

November 16, 2010  12:12 PM ET

It's nice to know he was already preparing for a future out of football. Sounds like a couple of DB's need to keep that in mind too.

Heard the same thing on Shakerin (Utah RB). He's only a sophomore, and done with football. Do you thing we're just more aware of it now, or are we seeing more concussions? Either way, gotta work on a helmet design that doesn't let the melon rattle so much.

You may not have to worry about it at all... if you get enough concussions...

+1. It's the right thing to do, and more kids should consider making the same choice.

They need to start calling spearing when a guy tackles with his helmet ... they let it happen at all levels. You should tackle with your shoulder.

Let's ask the subject of your avatar pic, "have you ever been tagged high in a softball game?"
