Tiger's new, improved attitude

Could we be witnessing the birth of a new Tiger Woods? Robert Lusetich at foxsports.com hopes Tiger's recent display of comedy at a dinner in Melbourne is a sign of a more likeable character emerging from the often stoic figure we've been used to.

Eddie McGuire, a man-about-town in Melbourne, wrote in his column in The Herald Sun that "we learnt more about the real Tiger Woods (that night) than we had seen in years and the audience loved it."

"What we found was that having a laugh at your own expense can be the best way to move on from situations and get on with your life."

Sage advice. Not surprisingly, Mark Steinberg, the never-smiling agent for Woods and IMG's head of golf, wasn't amused by the tone of the session. And he's part of the problem in the sense that his job is to monetize Tiger Woods, the brand.

But what about the human being?

At least one source within the Woods camp told me the pressure to be "Tiger Woods" took a heavy toll. So why not wish that cardboard cutout good riddance and move on with life?

not a big tiger fan.... i've been at tournaments where he was there and he treats fans like sh**. but he doesn't owe us anything. he's had a heck of a yr. maybe he will change. it might make his life more enjoyable. at his point in life.... why not do things that make life easier. he's got all the money he can use.... i know he's chasing jack's records, but it is not looking too good for him right now. laughter is good for everyone and he's paid a price for his behavior... let him be.

While I always admired TW's talent, I could never root for the guy because he WAS such a d1ckhedd to the fans. While he doesn't have to kiss a lot of fan-butt, softening his attitude toward them and becoming a little more fan friendly would go a long way towards turning people back to his side.

The irony of this situation is that in trying to become more open and less self-contained he may not be as good a player.
Tiger's focus and single-mindedness as a golfer was his strength, and he put the rest of his development as a fully rounded human being on hold as a youngster (with his father's encouragement). He certainly has reason to try to change that former person into someone who can find some joy in life beyond golf, but that may result in a loss of some concentration and drive to excel.
Next season will be an interesting one to watch; will the "new" Tiger have the same drive and focus as the former #1? For his sake, I hope he finds some peace of mind, and can still win some majors, but the former is a lot more important than the latter.

New and improved Tiger?

Well, the media is down at the bottom of the barrel with Woods as well. At least we get a five month hiatus from Brandel Chamblee waxing on about him. Pick it up next year at Augusta eh Brandel?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tiger have a win or two under his belt before April in Augusta.

This is all BS PR spin. Woods is out on a mission to rehabilitate his image. Yawn.

Wondering if there's a correlation between Tiger being winless and celibate last year. Just sayin...
