Panthers shopping for fighter

Panthers coach and general manager Jacques Martin admitted he has been looking to acquire an enforcer, but said the player who would fill that role well hasn't been available. Without a true heavyweight on the team, the Panthers' top players have had to defend themselves this season, and to a lesser extent, last season. There's especially concern of injury to leading scorer Nathan Horton, whose two fights so far are more than he's ever had in a season. Horton also has twice as many penalty minutes (24) than any teammate through eight games.

I think Cory Cross is available - he can't play hockey, or skate, nor is he overly tough, or smart, but he's extra-dumb and would likely do whatever the coach wanted of him.

Besides, is this REALLY the piece of the puzzle the Panthers are missing? They sure don't seem like such a good team that all they have to worry about is finding a tough guy. When Pittsburgh had the same need last year, everyone thought "fair enough". Is Florida stacked like the Pens were? I think not...

Time to Goon it up!

I think it's a great thing for the game. To hell with Bettman. I hope every team employs a heavyweight. Maybe then we will see a return to tough, physical hockey and not this Euro crap hockey we have to watch now.

tehehe if the cats don't mind using a goon for 3-4 games before being suspended again, Boulerice is on the waiver lines.

Memo to every NHL fan or otherwise who reads this blog: an enforcer IS NOT A FIGHTER(necessarily ;)

October 22, 2007  05:49 PM ET

An enforcer is not a fighter. An enforcer is simply someone who beats the c*rap out of anyone who messes with your top players, that's all. (DC)

Mike Tyson... the enforcer does nothing but fight anyways so tyson wont even have to learn to skate and ratings would go up from 3 people to 5.

Oh my goodness! Lightning just struck my brain... WWE is the universal solution to this problem! Need enforcers? Give the Undertaker or Triple H a one week crash course on skating and the possibilities are endless!!!

plus i've never seen anyone take a chair to anybody's noggin yet in the NHL - we can start with bettman...

ZeroSK1, did you forget about one of the former the L.A Kings coaches who tried to impale the ref with a hockey stick? What was his name? He threw the stick like a javeline! Good thing his aim wasn't too good or we would have seen for the first time ever a ref on a stick! LOL! (DC)
