Jeter's agent baffled by Yankees' tactics

09:34 AM ET 11.21 | Derek Jeter's agent Casey Close has said very little about his client's negotiation with the Yankees so far and thought the Yankees would do the same. He was wrong about that. All of a sudden, the Yankees have a lot to say, especially through "sources" close to the front office. Close thought everybody wanted to handle this negotiation the right way, maybe because his client has done things the right way with the Yankees from the day he ran out to shortstop for good in 1996. Only now you can't shut the Yankees up. Close said: "They continue to argue their points in the press and refuse to acknowledge Derek's total contribution to their franchise."

NY is supposedly going to offer 3 years and $45 million. Jeter reportedly wants at least 4 years and more money per year. I'm not saying that he hasn't been great, but ... do he and his agent really believe they can get more than 3/$45million on the open market for a 36 year old player with declining offensive and defensive abilities? What team would be willing to do that? What team besides the Yankees can afford to do that? Seems like rejecting that offer would be foolish for Jeter and Close.

The best contract for Jeter will be from the Yanks. Can't see any other scenario.

Casey Close is trying to be like Scott Boras apparently. Is he intentionally trying to antagonize the Yankees organization? If so, to what end? He is going to undermine Jeter's image and credibility by acting like this, all just to get his client a few more bucks. This guy needs to shut up and get with the negotiating. He's already pissing me off!

And never will be...
Jeter will retire as a Yankee - as it should be.

You must have the brain of a 1-year old, bro. How many W.S. rings does Jete have? I count about 4 or 5. DJ will get his paper after all's said and done.
$15m/year is just a low ball offer by the Yanks. Jete will get what he wants b/c he's the man that stirs the action in the BIG apple.

Maybe the Yankees are finally being smart. Jeter has zero leverage. Nobody else will pay him more than 5-7 million a year on a short term deal and he loses all his bs mystique if he leaves...the Yankees have all the cards.

... and you're correct.
Anything else is just negotiation and NY dramatics.

It's not as if NY will NOT resign Jeter...
... so, they are not holding cards in terms of letting him go.
Can you imagine the backlash if the Yankees did NOT resign Jeter?

Imagine if Georgie was still there? This thing would have been done and over with a while ago.

It appears to me, as a non-Yankees' fan, that they have been more than generous with this man, and there comes a time when we all have to move on and this may be his time.

i think what everyone is missing here is that any offer less than what A-Rod gets SHOULD be insulting to Jeter. how would you feel if you put the years and effort into your company to make it great, and some **** comes in from another company and gets paid TWICE what the company offers you?

Well, as always, placing more responsibility on the agent than the player. If Jeter doesn't want Close making these comments he should tell him so. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, Jeter said them.

To be clear, the teams Jeter played with have won 5 World Series. There were a few other good players on those teams.

I'd be insulted but I wouldn't wait until I'm close to "retirement" age before doing something about it!
