Has golf's power shifted from U.S. to Europe?

11:33 AM ET 11.21 | Not since the glory days of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the "famous five" of Seve Ballesteros, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam were winning majors, has the balance of power in the global game swung so markedly away from the US and towards a competitor the PGA Tour has long regarded as a junior -- very junior -- partner. That sense of superiority has always been rooted in the US tour's greater financial pull and, as long as US television continues to broadcast live golf and corporate America wants to associate itself with the sport, it will continue to exist. But there comes a point where the quality of the "product" -- more commonly known as the players -- has to count. Right now, the US has the sport's two biggest names in Tiger Woods and Mickelson. But how much longer will that be the case?

Prima donnas usually don't make for good team players. I think that's why the U.S. isn't all that spiffy in the category of cups like the Ryder. European players are regular guys with their feet on the ground. American players think they are Gods. Bad formula for team play.

I disagree. It's easy to call them "prima donnas" because they are in the US spotlight every week during the season whereas the Euros aren't. We watch them play, interview, etc on a weekly basis.

If you were to live in Europe or watch the Euro Tour religiously you might have the same opinion of the Euros. Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy, Jimenez, Ross Fisher, the Molinari boys; are they Prima's?!?!?! Probably...

Didn't I see something about McIlroy trading in some wholly unsuitable Porsche for a new Lamborghini?

I don't know what that means, but I bet it means something more than just having a lot of dough to chuck around.

I knew I should have quit my job and went to Q-School...

Who cares. The season never ends and they play for huge amounts of money. I don't care if European golfers paly in Europe. Because of the economy, American arrogance is dead for now.

November 22, 2010  07:09 PM ET

Oh, I don't know. Palin is still arrogant. If we're going to have a red-neck run for president I'd rather have Larry the Cable guy.

But comparing Palin to professional American golfers is almost as intelligent as electing Pelosi as the house minority leader...

Oh Christ, here we go again with your not so astute political commentary.

Let me get this straight, Palin is arrogant, yet Odumbo and his fat America hating k*nt of a wife are all kinds of humble? Did I get that right? Kinda funny since I don't remember any President in my 50 years traveling abroad with a posse of 500. Thanks for voting for that piece of shhiitte BTW. You really showed your political and economic acumen with that maneuver.

I'm really surprised you haven't moved to Europe yet Jon. After all in your eyes they do everything better than we do and they aren't the cause of all the worlds problems like we are.

Hard to believe that dumb biiitch Nancy Pelosi was only two heart beats away from the Presidency.
