'Baffling' approach offending Jeter?

08:19 AM ET 11.22 | The Yankees have an odd way of courting Derek Jeter. According to a source familiar with both sides, their "arbitration-ambush" approach in contract negotiations with the captain isn't doing them any favors. ... Jeter's agent, Casey Close, seems to agree. Close told the Daily News' Mike Lupica over the weekend that he found the Yankees' strategy "baffling," adding, "They continue to argue their points in the press and refuse to acknowledge Derek's total contribution to their franchise." It has been widely reported that Jeter is seeking a deal of five or six years, but the source believes those reports are overstating Jeter's demands: Instead, the 36-year-old Jeter is likely looking for a four-year contract that takes him through his 40th birthday -- similar to the deals the Yankees came to with both Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera three years ago.

Sounds like the Yankees smear campaign has begun.........

Jete's deal will get done before Christmas, no worries no doubt.

Hell Jeter shouldnt be asking for a 5 year deal at 16-20 million a season...Maybe he has to "settle" for a 3 year 36 million deal instead....Sir as great of a Yankee that you have been its now time for you to still be a team player about this..

Deal with it, Yanks hold all the cards.

Jeter has seen every contract in NY go something like this in one way or another. He knows not to take this part of it personally. It will be done. If there is one sure thing about a player staying put his entire career anywhere in baseball with the same club over the last decade- it is Jeter stayin a Yankee until he retires... Other players have too- but I am just saying there is less doubt in Jeters case...

Why is it every time someone is asked to "be a team player" about something- it means they are the one having to bend over and take it up the rear?

ha! only difference is the fans aren't buying it.it would be best for everyone if the yanks and jeter would just sign the deal...this is the same thread as yesterday's.most reasonable people know the deal is getting done.....its just a matter of time.

Yeah I hear you, I just couldn't resist. Maybe the Yanks should just quietly give him a percentage of all the memorabilia they sell along the way to his 3,000th hit milestone. That way Jeter gets his money, and the team looks they won in the negotiations. Everybodys happy. Not what I would like to see though:)

Fact...along those same thoughts...Why do corporate execs get bonuses for cutting costs when all they did was layoff a few hundred minions?Isn't part of their job to manage a budget and why should they get rewarded when others have to hit the unemployment line?

Yeah...
I agree with the sentimate. But being fortunate enough to have a job now a days I tend to rock the boat alot less...

My guess is they settle for something like 4 years $75 million or so.

I just want this to end to force the interns to find something new and exciting to post here.
