A day after the Gophers' devastating 27-21 loss to North Dakota State on Saturday, University of Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi met with first-year football coach Tim Brewster, whose team is 1-7. "Spent a long time with him," Maturi said Monday. "That's part of my job." Maturi continued to encourage and support his perpetually optimistic coach.

The perpetual kiss of death. Can you get fired after your rookie season?

October 23, 2007  10:24 AM ET

This article sparked a conversation inside my head. Here is the dialouge.

1 and 7! At least we will get a good draft pick!
---Nope not pro football
OH!

Well maybe Brewster can recruit thats the reason Maturi got him.
---Nope
What about Micheal Floyd the best recruit in the state?
--Nope
Charlie Weiss has a program that is self imploding and he still can get one the of the best players in the country?
--Correct
I guess the University of Minnesota isn't as appealing to local athletes.

Well No Bowl or the Sun Bowl?
--Whats thew difference?

What? I could care less about baseball, maybe a comment here and there but, I live in columbus, baseball doesnt matter here.

When you get a new coach it alienates the older players who are loyal to Glen Mason and I'm guessing the new staff is investing more time in the younger players because they'll be there next year so they're going to get worse before this team gets better. Let him get a chance to get his kind of players and give him 3 years to develop and see wehre this team is. I think the fans in Minnesota could help with recruiting if they were such bandwagon jumpers and people who just dont rip on someone when theyre down. If i was a recruit and i hear "fans" nagging all the time and what not i woulndt go there either plus the metrodome is hurting them too the new stadium should help who the hell wants to play inside espcailly college football

It would shock me if Brewster is gone after his first season as a result of the U of M firing him.

Even if Mason were still the coach, I doubt the record would be any better because the talent on the D would either be in jail or released from the team anyway.

I was listening to the mid-morning show on KFAN via internet yesterday morning and the observation was made that Mason would attract mostly the leftovers and occasionally a two-star recruit--this when the other schools in the conference were raiding the state of the best recruits in Minnesota--which speaks to Mason's ability as a coach--but not indicative of a commitment to improve the program nor that he had the best interests of the program in mind. Yes, under Mason, the Gophers would get to a second-tier bowl only to lose more often than they won. Where is the respect in that?

Even a casual observer of college football will tell you that a college football coach's main job is more salesmanship, PR and recruiting than Xs and Os--yes, he needs to be able to formulate a game plan, plan strategy but most of the real coaching is left to highly competent assistants. Brewster learned at the feet of one of the best in the business, Mack Brown--he deserves the opportunity to bring his plan to fruition.

This meeting with the AD was not the kiss of death as the initial post would indicate. Cousing Kyle, ND self-recruits and succeeds in spite of itself. If that program continues to suck and Weiss turns out to be the second coming of Gerry Faust, without the national sports drive-by media's perpetuation of the ND "mystique" it is nothing more than Morningside or Coe College only a little further east.

I personally am looking forward to the Gophers getting some payback next season and contending for a title and a trip to the Rose Bowl in two or three seasons after he's gotten more of his recruits into the program.

Mason left nothing on defense, and I'd give Brewster a couple of years to prove he's the recruiter everyone says he is. Let him learn/make his mistakes in the X's/O's department now with kids who aren't going to win anyway, and as the new recruits come in maybe he's not making as many. It's his first shot at the head coach position, and he isn't going to be perfect. As long as he learns, and starts bringing in some talent (please, for the love of all things pigskin, start with guys who understand that the concept of a "tackle" involves bringing the opposing player to the ground) we can afford the patience. I mean, what's another 3 years after so many mediocre ones?

October 29, 2007  10:47 AM ET

Gophers Still have more national championships in football than the Buckeyes.

That is good stuff.

Leather helmets maybe, but still a fact.

October 29, 2007  10:56 AM ET

Brewster already has more 4 star recruits than Mason ever had in a recruiting class. Give the guy some time. He will have 5 - four star athletes before the year is up.

How good is that star system anyway. It cant be that good or Notre Dame wouldn't be 1-7.

Maybe if the school would put some commitment around building the program like Michigan, Ohio State and USC. There is no love for football, everything is hockey in Minnesota. Which isn't bad but the football team could be so much better. Football is the most popular sport in college and to the UofM it isn't. Why even put a team on the field if it doesn't have the support like the other schools.

I guess getting out of the Metrodome is a start. All of the past success with this program was done on campus and since the dome opening in 1982, there have been some bad years. Granted in the 70's everyone but Michigan and Ohio State were bad. Population and a ton of scholarships will do that to you.

Let's hope the on campus stadium turns things around. Lets hope Brewster the salesman can coach.
