Yankees daring Jeter to look elsewhere?

08:09 AM ET 11.24 | Brian Cashman made another counterpunch in what has become a strangely public negotiation. The Yankees are so confident with their offer to Derek Jeter that they're all but publicly daring their iconic shortstop to find something better on the open market. "We're not trying to chase Derek away. We're trying to get him to sign," general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday. "But at the same time, he's a free agent. If he doesn't like what we're offering him, if he can find a better opportunity with more money, that's fine. Whatever's important to him."

Smart move by the Yankees. No one else will pay him anywhere close to what they are offering. His value as a legend doesn't really exist outside of NY (calm down Yankee fans, I'm not saying he is not seen as a legend outside of NY, just that no other team will be willing to overpay for his passed performance) and thus he holds very little leverage in these negotiations.

Every year though, there is some team that hands out an insane contract though. I know Detroit is the leader in the clubhouse with their contract to Benoit, but I don't think that is the worst one we are going to see.

3 yrs at $45 million sounds like a damn good deal to me for a 37 yr old shortstop who just batted .270.

I just think his numbers were overly inflated playing in that bandbox.

I can see the Red Sox, who have a void at short, doing something just to stick it to the Yanks.

that and the fact he knows they have the money. it's not that they can't pay him $20M, it's just they choose not to. and like you stated, they had no problem overpaying for everybody else.

If the Sox didn't want to pay VMart $12.5M, the sure aren't gonna pay Jeter $15M.

Those guys weren't 37 though and coming off lousy (for him) years at the plate. Don't get me wrong, I hope the Yanks give him 30 mil per for 6 years.
It would be the right ting to do;)

For once, I would just love to see a player just walk away and retire if he's unhappy with the money he was offered. His skills are diminishing, he has more money than he will ever need and has won 5 rings. His place in history is already been determined. He has nothing left to prove.

The last part of the quote is the most interesting, Cashman is simply putting it out there that Derek is simply in it for the money(which i don't blame jeter one bit for) to try and smear his squeeky clean image a little

You make a good point about Arod but when he got that extention he was coming off an mvp 50hr, 150rbi, .314ba, etc, although that might've been HGH inhanced but at the time that yankees didn't know about it......jeter is coming off his worst statistical year since his rookie year

If this were the Red Sox, the accusations of character assassination would be flying all over the thread.

If they really want Crawford, they should get him. I don't see the Yanks getting involved unless they lose out on Lee. Lot of money came off the books this year, and even more comes off after 2011...........
