Official: Yanks to pick manager soon

Don Mattingly was the second candidate to interview for the Yankees' opening. Joe Girardi interviewed Monday and first-base coach Tony Pena is scheduled to go today. General manager Brian Cashman is withholding comment during the search, but one Yankees official who has spoken with Cashman believes a decision could come soon. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not involved in the search process, said he got the impression there will be no further interviews after Pena's and that a decision would come by the end of the month and possibly by the weekend. Teams must get permission from the commissioner to make major announcements during the World Series, which opens tonight, but Friday is an off day for the series and could be good timing for a Yankees hire.

giradi is my pick

It's Mattingly for sure!

Will Tony Pena stay with Yankee organization and work for Donnie? Bowa's almost gone already.

October 24, 2007  09:11 AM ET

Don't count Girardi out, and, hopefully, Pena stays. He should be made into the bench coach. His influence with Posada and the young Spanish speaking players, in my opinion, is hard to find, forget about replacing him if he leaves.

Girardi's chances are headed in one direction.

October 24, 2007  09:37 AM ET

I would hope Pena stays in some form; Melky, Robbie and a few others around the clubhouse love him. Everyone seems to think Don 'black cat under a ladder' Mattingly is a shoe-in, but I'm holding hope for Girardi.

October 24, 2007  09:56 AM ET

That is a fleeting hope, as slim and flimsy as a tissue.

October 24, 2007  10:02 AM ET

Pick a manager soon? What a farce. Yanks have been ready to annoint Mattingly manager since April. The only reason interviews are going on is because the league has rules governing the number of candidates and minorities interviewed. The probably already have Mattingly's #23 jersey ready for next year but just in case he fails they interview Girardi to keep him happy with Yankee brass and up in the broadcast booth so if a switch needs to be made they can insert him. Pena is a great baseball guy but he has to know that the only reason he is getting an interview is because he is a minority.

I hope it is Mattingly. Then the player that can never be booed will be hated by all Yankee fans for doing a terrible job at managing.

I think it is going to be Mattingly, but honestly all three are good choices in their own way.

October 24, 2007  10:43 AM ET

If they are choosing a manager so soon than it is obviously Mattingly.

Cashman looks like the guy from the OFFICE

Don Zimmer. Don Zimmer. Don Zimmer.

October 24, 2007  11:18 AM ET

Zim would be a great choice.... too bad the Boss hates him.

October 24, 2007  11:31 AM ET

Yawn, who gives a rat's a*s

October 24, 2007  11:39 AM ET

Part of me wishes the Yankees come out of left field with a completely random choice for manager. Won't happen but it'd be nuts if at the press conference they pulled a swerve on the media like that.

October 24, 2007  12:06 PM ET

Pena??? I know he had one solid year with the Royals and then it was a mess. Joe is the choice and then Donny.

October 24, 2007  12:14 PM ET

Pena is too highstrung to be an effective long term manager
